straight six has something like 200 less moving parts in it. keep it simple stupid.  tried and tested.

Will your 6 ride my 3100 pound camper and pull my 5000 pound boat effectively?  :chuckle:

Yes it will.

I coulda swore he was talking about his Jeep. Lol.

... I have the 6 speed stick and i believe it is made by alision... i thinks...
No sir.
Until mid/late production year 2005, the 6 speed was manufactured by New Venture hence the NV5600 model for the transmission.  Same company who did the 5 speeds since 1994.  From mid 2005 to present, the transmission is manufactured by Getrag hence the G56 model.
The majority of the 2005's on the road have the 5600.
If reverse is away and up, next to 5th, it's a NV5600.
If reverse is toward you and down, next to 2nd, it's a G56.

6x6x6 rev is away from me... i was wrong on the detail but you prove my point that dodge does not make any of the import and drive train parts in my 1 ton... I am Very surprised that Dodge has not taken the in line 5 from its sprint vans and put it in its dakotas OR half tons.. My folks have a mini winni base off the sprint van that gets 18mpg and 14 while towing their PT cruizer... Could you imagine a $wd dakota that got 35mpg? it would sell like hotcakes! I'd strongly look at one and i'm not much of a dodge fan.  :twocents:

The G56 isn't made by Getrag. The G56 in the Rams is a Mercedes transmission. Used in many of their trucks in Europe.

I believe the Mercedes transmission is the 45FRE, a 4 speed automatic. That's what I have in my '04 Hemi. I wasn't aware that the 6 speed manual is made by Mercedes.   :dunno:

From what I understand, the Mercedes trans (45FRE) is only behind the Hemi (starting in '04) and in the Viper. The auto trans behind the Cummins is, I believe, a 48RE (starting in '04).

the mercedes trans is not the g56 , that is a gertrag trans. mercedes does manufature a few of the autos but not the six's.

anyone who has ever had or worked on a dakota knows their front ends can barly handle a light little gas motor never mine the heavier diesel. look up the ford ranger diesel and toyota hilux diesel they are  sold in europe and other countries great little trucks but  cannot pass emissions for the states. its is such a scam.

Dude you're wrong. The G56 is NOT a Getrag. Its a Mercedes. Its the same 6spd manual that Mercedes uses in their trucks up to like 40,000lb GVWR. The transmission itself is very stout. The dual mass flywheel that Dodge uses to keep the trans quiet is a POS.

The G56 came from Mercedes.

i see these little diesel's all the time. I would take one back to the states in a heartbeat if i could do it for a reasonable price.

Alright I have watched this post for too long and haven't put my  :twocents: in. So here is my rant & rave :boxin:

First off I will have to say that I am a GM lover. I like everything GM has done to their pickups. I mean how can you beat an Allison Trans... GM has had the Duramax/Allison combo for 10 years and they have created a great marriage. I will be honest I always have agreed with C_Money... You cannot beat a Cummins. If/when Allison and Cummins come together it will be unstopable in the Powertrain department. I don't like anything built around the Cummins thou. Cummins I think are holding back performance wise because the transmissions can't hold up. That is why GM is always out performing Dodge. As far as Ford, they make nice interior and gas engine but lack everything else. The 2011 is starting to give GM a run for their money but aren't quite there yet.
I don't know if many of you are aware of a site called Pickuptrucks.com but the last 2 years they have had a HD Shootout. With Ford, Dodge, and GM. The last 2 years GM products took home the prize. It is good reading and very intersting because Ford did almost beat GM this year in parts like 40-0 breaking Ford won hands down. This year they called it The Heavy-Duty Hurt Locker . It's a 2,200-mile, four-state slog towing trailers that weigh almost 10 tons each and push each truck's gross combined weight to more than 90 percent of their gross combined weight rating.
Here is a link http://special-reports.pickuptrucks.com/2011/08/2011-heavy-duty-hurt-locker-introduction.html
As I said a great read, Ford did well, Dodge kind of lagged but they were non bias and did a very good test.
So my rant is over Please read the report before you start bashing the people who did the tests. If you want to bash on my opinion then that's fine. I have thick skin. :IBCOOL:

Addicted.. If you come back to the states you SHOULD buy a Toyota Hilux, and here is why... They are nearly identical to the toyota tacoma.. The only way to get those deisel motors in the USA is to bring in the engine then do the swap(fairly expensive or time consumeing) OR if you are a service member you can bring one whole into the usa. According to rules you can bring it back but cannot sell it... I think you can gift it to imediate family members, but thats it...
On a side note i heard that Suzuki  has plans to bring thier deisel  samuri that is sold overseas here to the usa... I would buy one in a hart beat... BTW its the solid axle version...
