I voted cummins, because I have one, after driving powerstrokes for work, and I had a LLY duramax that blew both headgaskets on me, it was an easy choice.

Actually in the mid west there is a big diesel conversion movement going on. The cummins in line 4 used in backhoes and other equipt can bolt right up to the dodge pickup trannies. the bell housing is the same for the in line 6 and 4...

I think i'd had even read about a yanmar, so don't laugh too loud PolarBear!
I have twin Yanmars in my boat and they are AWESOME!  I know guys with Yanmar tractors wo love them as well.

My fathers "John Deere" has one... Its really just a Yanmar painted green, but what the hell.

My "little" brother was a Ford Mech, and he says the 7.3 was the best engine ford has ever produced, and there was a reason why it was in some International trucks. (Mostly Uhauls)

Maybe because the 7.3, 6.0, 6.4 are actually International engines?

But the 6.0 and 6.4 have had way more trouble than the 7.3... The weak link for most 7.3's was the auto tranny behind them.  :twocents:

The best motor dodge has EVER had in its vehicles is the Cummings and its not made by them either.

It was my understanding that the 6.0 and the 6.4 were made all by Ford. I thought that is why International quit selling their engines to Ford because Ford kept on adding parts and stuff to it that International didn't argee to which casued the engines to have sooooo many problems.

The Ford 7.3 is based off of the T444E International Engine.  The 6.0, 6.4, 6.7L are all based off the VT365 International Engine. There are differences in each of them, but they are essentually an International engine addapted for passenger vehicle use. (Ford add-on's per EPA rules)

As stated, the weak link behind the 7.3 was the 'automatic transmission' behind them.  I believe that still holds true, for Ford and Dodge. (and I'm not a big Alison trany fan either)  I have been very happy with my ZF 6spd and know others that are also happy with their standard transmissions behind their diesel engines.  (800 pounds of torque at the fly wheel 'if not treated delicately', trying to launch an 7-8,000 pound 4x4 will break just about anything though.)

Gramps has a 7.3 and they blew the tranny in under 5k miles. Ford had the dealership crate up the tranny and ship it to the factory for R&D.

They have 4 of them on the ranch and all under 50k miles  :yike:
