Gun safe
« on: March 07, 2011, 08:08:46 PM »
In January I was at Costco and they had a nice 20 gun Winchester safe for $650 I saved up some cash and went to get it this weekend no safes. Give me some advice where do you guys think I should go I live in south Seattle. I don't really want to spend over $800 I already went to outdoor emporium. I know I should have bought the Costco safe when I first saw it.

Yeah it's just tough because I feel like it is something that I would like to touch and feel first and the one that I liked at Costco is no longer offered.

Hold on to the money. Costco has safes a few times a year, so just wait, they'll be back.

I think you are right but I am a little disappointed I was looking forward to getting a safe. I will keep looking and wait for a good deal.

I heard on the Big R radio ad today that they have the "Fat Boy" gun safe on sale.  Don't know how much.  Bought my 22-gun safe there last year.  Good sales on them this time of year.  Big R is in Yakima and here in Wenatchee, so it might not be worth the drive.

Call all the costcos within a comfortable drive for you and see if they hve any in stock, or just the floor model. i bought a safe (floor model) from costco for 100 bucks less than when they had them in stock...

To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

As many have said on here before, I STRONGLY suggest you buy one at least twice the size that you think you will need.  Also unless things have changed recently, there is no sales tax on gun safes in Washington.
Nothing witty here.... move along.

Hyde's right-- I thought the 22-gun model would be plenty big enough.  In reality, it won't begin to hold 22 guns, especially if they have scopes on them.

no sales tax on gun safes in Washington.

I just bought a safe from Cabelas, no tax and only $20 for delivery  , made by Liberty for Cabelas with warranty carried by Liberty. Buy bigger than you need, they fill up fast and it's not like you replace them very often either.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

The recent Field and Stream had an article that said count your current number of guns. Give a score of 2 for scoped guns and 1 for all other guns, multiply by 1.5 and thats how big of a safe you should get. Make the multiplier bigger if you plan on purchasing lots of new firearms.
Obviously this isnt science but could be a good rule of judgement for someone buying their first safe

Did you have them check other stores? I recently saw a coupon for Costco for a gun safe.

Watch Craigslist for a safe.  I got one about 4 months ago on CL for $450 from a woman that got a divorce.  Its a Browning Yukon Gold around $900 safe new, and it a little over a year old and new condition.  I keep my video cameras in it, binos, knives, cameras, scopes, ammo, cash and guns, never really been a big gun guy and since Ive had it I acquired 3 new guns, really not much more room in it, I will eventually have to upgrade.  At least they are out of reach of the kids and will detour the crocks...

The Costco online price is to your door which is a  serious consideration. As others have stated whatever you get will prove too small, I'm not sure why this is but that is just the way it works with gun safes. I'm thinking a re-enforced concrete addition to the house with the door from an old bank vault would be adequate for a couple of years at least.
