Suggestion For NE Elk?
« on: March 08, 2011, 12:37:37 PM »
Hey, after chasing those bulls in my picture i posted which in the end failed due to logging  :bash:. i decided that i would do some more scounting and was wondering if which area should be the best bet to put my scouting trip into.  I know that I would have to put miles on my leg but to help save some for the hunting season. :chuckle: i just want some suggestion if i should scout the Le Clerc area or should i go more north and scout the metaline falls? Any suggestion would help. or should i go with getting a tag in Idaho for success since it seems that the percentage is higher from what everyone is talking about. :chuckle: THXS.

I'd go to Colorado.  Less rattle snakes, ticks and ants and a lot more elk. :chuckle:

I suggest going to the Blues or Mt Rainier area.

I thought there was know elk in the blues?  :dunno:
I think you would have better chances at the place you were at last year.

I agree with Piledup. They're in there. Just got to be patient. We saw elk almost everyday! I just had to give idaho a chance this year to explore new country...

I have found elk by le clerc but never sealed the deal. Seems like they move a lot so if
You are seeing them figure out the best way to hunt that area and hope they are
There during season. Finding them is half the battle. The thick underbrush is the second half. If you know where they frequent you are ahead of the game. I am going to idaho this year just to
Try something new and with better terrain and opportunities. I will always check
My wa ne hotspot just to potentially do something most people can't.

thxs for the info and yea i know that the place i went last year holds some nice elk, but I'm just tired scouting so hard and get ruined by loggers who say they weren't gonna logged that area. :bash: so as a precaution this years i was just looking through the map and saw that the Le Clerc and metaline falls has a lot of wilderness with limited rd access. So i would just like some suggestion if i were to plan a scouting trip which area would be less likely to meet people.

Invislbe agent..... Less details on the NE.... I met you up on the mountain, the logging didnt help us.... They are there, but that is elk hunting. I hunt WA and Idaho. I missed an elk last year in Idaho but was successful the previous 3 years.... You and chuethou need to meet up with me for lunch and we can talk some strategies....
I had a pic of that bull as well...... But when guys illegaly take there 4 wheelers back when we hike in 6 miles it ruins it!!!!! When we see guys with rifle and  abow and claim im bear hunting and my frien d is archery elk.... Sorry frustarted too.

PM me, well get together!

Elkaholic we should have lunch one of these days and come up with strategies, I'm pretty pumped for this coming year!

Pre season scouting is about useless.. these elk move alot. Best advice is to find areas u want to hunt, get here before opener 3 days or so and scout. Any elk you find in July or august are probably long gone. There are honey holes where the elk like to be every year during the rut,but that takes time in hunting the area and finding these spots.

I have caught lots of elk on my trail camera while preseason scouting in the LeClerc Crk. area, but in three years I have yet to see one once the season actually opens. I have decided to save my pennies and go to Idaho.
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Your character is who you actually are while your reputation is merely who others think you are.

Yeah I am not even putting my trail cam out in the hole
This year , I always get elk on it but that doesnt fill my tag and I am getting sick
Of crawling through brush. I got lucky and found them during the season one time and I figure if they are back I would rather find out when I have a tag.  I keep hoping for a
Nice fire to clear the underbrush, but haven't been that lucky yet ; )

Yeah the NE is definitely a hard area to hunt. Not to mention when you finally find your "honey hole" and come back the following season and find out it has been logged! Thats why its called hunting i guess...

That NE region is way overdue for a big fire. It sure would improve that habitat, for both deer and elk.

Looks like I'll be checking out black canyon!  Fires are natures way of clearing out under brush. We need them every few years or we will have a huge fire that destroys eveything.  We need a management plan like they have in yellowstone.

We used to be able to go from Black canyon to O'hare creek but not anymore. They have put up locked gates and posted signs right around Morty's pass.  :dunno: I know there is state land up there but I do not know who or what outfit did it.

Everyone and their brother hunts Black canyon. You won't be alone that's for sure.  :twocents:

:yeah:

If the enviro's would loosen up on their stranglehold of the National Forest, we could have a little more logging which has the same effect as a forest fire for making habitat. At the same time, some of the "cronicly out of work" folks would be able to get a job.  :twocents:

Have you been out towards Sheep creek....they have actually done some pretty good size clearcuts up that way. I know most are talking about farther east.....I spend most of my time in Stevens county.

I agree that logging would be very beneficial and I know a lot of people who could use a increase in business. Maybe we can get the history channel to push for a ne wa outfit to star in ax men and then they will open it up! We have good logging practices now so
I don't know why they are so hesitant.
