Is a mosin nagant any good for hunting?
« on: March 10, 2011, 05:33:49 AM »
I have a Mosin nagant 91/30 with a scope mount on it it even shoots near sub-moa at 100 yards, it is a bit unwieldy for moving about and the safety is almost unusable, but it shoots good and is durable, I am wondering if the 7.62x54r is any good for hunting as I know it may be a bit overkill for deer, but is good for other big game, the problem I have is that I would probably be going for coyotes mainly and that would blow them apart, and I know I can hit them with this gun easily. I am wondering if all the weight and hassle of the mosin is worth it for hunting or is there a way I can get another rifle that is not to expensive that does the same job better with more accuracy and mobility. ( I may be trading this particular rifle for a cheap 9mm pistol as I believe I have more use for that right now as I haven't had a chance to go hunting...)(and I have another mosin that I am keeping around too... everyone should have at least one mosin...)

A Mosin would work fine for hunting as long you use soft point type bullets. If you have one that shoots sub-MOA and want to get rid of it, send me a pm.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

i wouldn't say that its an overkill on deer,  it has similar balistics to a 308, and its definately good for any big game you'll be hunting in this state. it just sucks how heavy they are,  i have one too, i used to take it out alot just for plinking.  it amazes me how far i can consitantly hit small targets.  those things are definately acurate.  what kind of scope mount do you have on it?  mine is all original, i was thinking about using it as a project gun,  but changed my mind,  so its just sitting in storage.  might try too sell it  :dunno:

I have an ATI mount and bent bolt done by a professional, Its heavy all right, I'm trading out for a maverick 9mm, unless someone wants to pay cash with enough for me to buy the pistol too...
Or If someone has a high point pistol that they don't need, the deal is still in the air. If you still hasn't that stock 91/30 in a couple weeks I may be interested in it as I want a stock one... My mosin is also up in the classifieds.

I saw the group you posted in the classifieds, it's about 6 inches or so?

My uncle killed a nice 4x4 two years ago with his Mosin, I couldn't believe it, open sights at 100 or so yards. Dead X. Good luck if you go for it.
