Anyone see this yet? Idaho Cougar vs Idaho Wolf
« on: March 10, 2011, 05:13:26 PM »
Got this in an email...

Some friends ran a cougar this weekend near Garden Valley .  They heard a hell of a racket and when they finally got around to where it was they found the cougar treed over a dead wolf.  It looked like the wolf and cat had gotten into it and the cat kicked the wolf’s ass big time.

I saw that and was trying to figure out the whole situation...was the cat killing the wolf when the hounds jumped him?

That is one huge cat! I feel a bit sad for the cat too, he sure earned a pardon in my book for taking out a wolf. Hope he killed a bunch more of those dang dogs.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

Brian my son says he knows the guys with the dogs and they have good dogs, we think maybe the wolf came in to kill the dogs that were treed and the dogs had it out with the wolf and for once the wolf lost and the dogs were lucky enough to live. :twocents:

Maybe Brian will hear what happened???????

If the dogs ended up taking the wolf out, how are they holding up??

Either way, pretty epic scenario.. Cool that they killed 2 predators with 1 stone (bullet) though  :dunno:

I wondered about the dogs killing the wolf... I just can't think of a scenario where a lion kills a wolf and gets treed by hounds.  :dunno:

hounds are pretty tough animals.  I suppose a pack of them would stretch a wolf.  Did they show any marks?  It seems impossible for all of them to come out unscathed!

That's terrible. That poor wolf was just trying to be a wolf and was killed by dogs or was killed by the mountain lion because the mountain lion was in a panic caused by the dogs. This is why dogs should be leashed and hunting should not be allowed on public land. If you just have to hunt, then do it on private land while you still can. For the wolf to attain it's rightful place we need to remove the human element. ;)

Sorry for the sarcasm, I could not resist.

I'd guess just about any cougar worth its salt would destroy any wolf. Now throw in 3 or more wolves and its a different story.  but in a heads up match them dogs dont stand a a chance..  in my opinion. :twocents:

Joe,  thanks for post. Very cool.  I caught a very nice lion over in idaho and I had four wolves cut appox 600 yds to next cut lion. I still turn loose. Good thing it was only 285 yds treed whee I would hate if four wolves found my hounds..     :yike:

Very cool story and thanks for post pics.    I love the most is dead wolf.   ;)

Cougars kill and eat coyotes, so why not a wolf? Maybe the cat was about ready to have a wolf meal when the dogs showed up.

It is documented that predators eat each other. Cougars can kill a wolf and wolves (most often in a pack) kill cougar on a fairly regular basis. In guessing, I still think it's most likely the single wolf came into the barking dogs at the treed cat, this time the dogs outnumbered the wolf and the wolf died instead of the hounds. Usually a pack of wolves come in and kill the hounds.

These photos are starting to make the email rounds and I bet there will be a government inquiry into how this wolf died. The state of Idaho is no longer managing wolves but the feds are. I would not want to be the guys in the photo just because I bet they end up having to face a lot of questioning even if everything was on the level.  :twocents:

Got this in an email...

Some friends ran a cougar this weekend near Garden Valley .  They heard a hell of a racket and when they finally got around to where it was they found the cougar treed over a dead wolf.  It looked like the wolf and cat had gotten into it and the cat kicked the wolf’s ass big time.
