i rode all the manufactures bikes before buying and the only three i would even consider are can-am, arctic cat, and polaris.  all the others just felt wronge.  can-am,  LOTS of power and a huge price tag to go along with it,  polaris and arctic cat were identical to me and i got a better price on the polaris.  sounds like something let go in the tranny.  ill look at the break down and see if i can find anything on it.  if it were me and i had that many problem with it id scrap it and get a new one.  too much money and time to be stuck 30 miles from nowhere with a broke down bike... :twocents:

bought the Polaris 500 efi 3 years ago....saw it listed at Columbia River Motor Sports in Oregon for $5888.00 with the custom green paint job-no set up charges.  Went to Power Sports NW in Centraila and they had the same exact bike but wanted an additional $800 for set up charges.  Showed them the ad for the bike in Oregon with no set up fees and they said "sorry can't do it"  Told them to kiss my arse and drove the hour south to Oregon and bought the bike...haven't regretted it.....bike has performed flawlessly over the years and have never thought twice about driving the extra time...love the bike---rides like a cadillac with the independent suspension but the only bad thing i have to say about it is hard to turn around---turning radius sucks but other than that is a pleasure to ride

I have a 05 Sportsmen 500. The only issue I have ever had with it is the ECM controls the battery charging. They had a recall to fix the issue where the battery would not charge. Other than that, its been a great machine. Both Dad and I have one. His has a winch on it. Mine is pretty much stock still.

I have a 2008 Polaris 500.  Great bike no issues. Starts everytime and handles the terrain very well.

I've owned multiple Polaris snowmobiles, just bought two more this past week, excellent machines.  But if I were to win a Polaris Four wheeler in a give away, I'd simply hope that the Yamaha or Honda shop would take it in trade. JMHO.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

This time Its locked up in reverse. I was going down the road. I heard a pop and it kicked in neutral. Would not go into drive, but pulled it back into reverse and now its locked in reverse. :dunno: I have tried for the life of me to get it out but am afraid. I will break it if I mess with it any harder then I have. Had to ride it about 1 mile in reverse back to the truck. :yike: THAT IS HARDER THEN YOU THINK :lol4: I use to be a Polaris junkie, but after this one I don't think I will ever touch one again. I have over 2500.00 in repairs already into a machine with 180 miles on it. When we first got it, It would over heat and shut off on us. It was under warranty at the time, and we had it back and fourth to the shop 4 times to get that problem fixed. If that wasn't under warranty. I would have 15k into the darn thing. I have had 4wheelers all my life and snow machines to. Never Have I had such a lemon.
Thats the same quad I had, That generation of sportsman had crappy shifter boxes on them.
Take the right side plastic cover off between the seat and front fender to expose the shifter box.
Now you can either grab the two linkages coming from the shifter box to the tranny and manually try
to shift them (its not easy) and get it unbound (this is what i would do in the field) or you can take
the top of the shifter box off to expose the shifter rod and then line up the two shifter holes in the
box before you put the top back on. While you have it apart you can check the fluid level in the shifter box.
I'm going to Goldendale here in a week or so to visit family, if you dont get it fixed I would be happy to help.

Here's the one I had.
