Stock up....I've always thought that ammo would/could be used as currency in such a market.

Achieve a 10 year stockpile......

there is about a 100 year supply of guns in the United States... and only about a 2 year supply of ammo.  To further emphasize that perspective, I have noticed that price sensitivity in raw materials (namely brass, copper, etc) usually drives up the cost of ammo more than firearms, at least on a % basis.

I assume that is a 2 year supply in the pipeline, during times of peace.  If a domestic shooting war were to break out, I'm betting that ammo supply will dry up in 6 months or less.  Probably dramatically less.  The thing is, if we were to be invaded, the US military would not want civilian ammo or weapons available to the enemy.  My guess is, post invasion, (day 2), what you have, will be what you have.  A good example was 9/11.  That morning, I was at the dentist watching the news while getting my teeth worked on.  I will NEVER forget that moment, watching that 767 fly into the WTC on the news.  I build these babys, and I could tell the way that aircraft was being flown, that was no accident.  The only unanswered question in my mind, was, was this a nutcase pilot, or was this an act of war.

I left the dentist and drove straight to my local gunshop to buy another pistol.  It was still closed when I got there, yet there was a long  line of men waiting for the store to open.  $hit had hit the fan....  If ferrin troops had hit the our soil that day, I'm betting that store, and all others selling guns and or ammo would be sold out or ransacked, in the first day...

I've been reloading close to three decades now.  For the first time I can recall, primers are in short supply.  They have been in short supply for a couple of years now.  The supply comes and goes both pistol and rifle, large and small primer size.  It continues to be spotty with no end in sight.  This is in the context of all sources, local merchants, internet sales, anywhere I know of.  My understanding is this is because of the Iraq/Afghanistan wars and the amount of lead therapy we're administering over there.  Old timers tell me these ammo component shortages in the civilian market were also common during the previous major wars as well.

No primers...no ammo...period.  Given desperate times, I could probably eventually home brew powder from raw materials....maaaybe.  I could melt down my lead boat anchor to make cast bullets.  I'm sure I could scrounge more lead too.  But no way am I coming up with a home brew primer replacement.  In my experience, primers are the most 'strategic' component in reloading.

So, over the last two years I've stockpiled primers, buying them whenever I found primers to buy in bulk.  I recommend anyone who reloads, do the same....Jeff

There is simple equipment to build your own primers, and recipes for the mix....

See, that's what I'm talkin' about!  :yeah:

9/11: I was still in college being programed by the 'Libs but lemmie tell you, that day was the beginning of the end of that crap in my brain.  When a catastrophie hits, even the Kool Aid People have to retreat into the ocean of reality.  No offense to you open minded, hard working Dems out there.

I will definitely take your advice and also stock up on some primers and what not.  But for now you've helped solidify my conviction that I need to buy this ammo soon, even before I get the guns to shoot 'em with
:mgun:

Lets all thank God to live in the U.S.A. and hope that our honorable vigilance never requires a 100% unleashing. May God bless America.

It starts with sody pop cans for the shell.....theres a little tool you can buy, it just punches 'em out!

I've got over 11,000 primers on the shelf now....just have to quit shooting quite so much, but its a dang-hard-to-quit weekness of mine.....and I've infected the kids!  :bdid:

jeff100-I think our worries will come from "within". Ever think about our local Law Enforcement taking firarms from citizens in the wake of Katrina? Those same citizens that were only defending thier property.....

In those same circumstances, Americans were raping Americans, taking food, water, property-From Americans. Only those that had weapons could defend themselves, and thier property.

In a situation such as that, of cource you could not purchase reloading components, nor could you purchase firearms, they were not available, nor would Big Brother allow it....Why?

I have no fear of another country invading us (except Canada, since our Pres signed the bill to allow Canadian Forces to Police American Peoples in case of a "Police State", and boy oh boy has there been a buch of rights signed away in the name of "Protection").

If you are waiting for somebody to invade.....your missing the boat.

Littletoes - Yes.  You and I are on the same page my friend.  I didn't start the thread nor want to hijack it, but I couldn't agree with you more.  I am unconcerned about aggression on our soils by a foreign state.  Domestic threats, that's another story.  IMO, these are very dangerous times.  I can't imagine what another ten years is going to bring...

That's all I have to say in a public forum...Jeff

I'm with you Jeff, but I would add, what we will be seeing is the loss of more and more rights, sort of a 'chipping away'.

Look at the next presidential election...two of the most liberal candidates to have ever run, you vote for the "least" of the two, and we as Americans still loose.

Its NOT a choice, we have Constitutional Rights, and they keep getting circumvented by laws in the name of our own protection....a bunch of crap.
Another, we keep having laws passed that force us to become a country with Mexico and Canada...but thats another aspect all together....it does place a burden on the working men and wemon of our country though.

Again, we agree.  I have been in violent disagreement with my 'buddies' about all these laws changed/passed in the name of homeland security.  I don't get it, my normally independent buds seems willing to bend over and give up any and all their freedoms, if some idiot claims it's necessary in the name of fighting terrorists.

I will say, we are somewhat lucky to live in Washington state.  The state constitution was written my men who really had the citizens best interests at heart.  It would be flat out unconstitutional for the state government to confiscate any weapons during a disaster.

Quote
Washington State Constitution
SECTION 2 SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND. The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the land.

SECTION 24 RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS. The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired...

That probably wouldn't stop Hagwire and her flying monkeys from trying some scam to get around this law if they wanted to ignore it, but that's another topic...Jeff

my browning abolt .30-06

Actually the invasion is coming in on the southern border. It is a silent and non hostile invasion per say.

Could not have said it any better

The possible future uprising has been called a "Race War."  I disagree,  I totally believe it will be a social economic war.  The haves -vs- the have not's.  It will come as a result of the widening gap between the people "with resources" or (assumed to be with resources) and the people who think "they" (the government) should "GIVE" them some of what what is "DUE" them.  (Just because they made it across the border without being caught or just don't want to work)

I could go on forever here, but bottom line is; I will be prepared as best as possible, but you can't feed your family with ammo and without medicine and medical treatment you won't recover from a bullet wound.  Assuming your in an ever lasting gun fight (The one that uses all that ammo) your bound to take one.

Don't get me wrong here I truly believe 9mm, 223 and other NATO type ammo will be currency someday but that currency will be spent hand to hand not muzzle to muzzle for most people.  I will also only give up my guns and ammo  bullet at a time but my shots will be well placed.

I guess I think about survival from a different perspective.  I want to survive with my family to see the outcome.

Food power and real security are what really matter to me.

Ok enough of a rant.

It's not what gun(s) to have it's all about ammo with me. Been stockpiling .30-06 for my Garand's and .22 ammo for the 10/22's for about a year. You never know when it won't be available. I remembered one thing from my days as a Boy Scout, be prepared.
