Hey Yelp, question on the squealing hen
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:46:55 PM »
Yelp,

Is it best early in the season or mid season?
Do you blow for 10, 15, or 30 seconds at a time?
Early or Mid-Morning?

This year I am going to try to shoot only one turkey at a time. Shooting two on the opener robbed me of hunting the other eastern wa sub-species. With all the bad weather, I do not relish laying flat in the mud or snow, since there are no trees except a few where the turkeys roost and they are on adjacent land. I am hoping for a large jake. The land owner where the adult toms roost will have about 16 or 17 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren hunting the youth opener. The adults have built blinds for them to hide in.
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.

I would say peak breeding which would be early season.  I would blow it for a short amount of time 10 -15sec..  Early or mid morning.  Try it every 20 minutes or so.
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!

I'll be 61 in a couple of months and am a lifelong turkey hunter. I have never, ever heard a hen turkey make a sound like comes from that call. :o I use a lot of Hunter Specialties® products, Blinds & Ring Zone® calls. I'm not trying to insult anyone, but I feel that call is a total waste of money.

95% of the breeding takes place prior to opening day..that means 5% of the time this may work up here.   Down south when wild turkeys nest earlier this technique may work better for those hunters.

Just add a little banjo music, and....  Oh, we're talking about Turkeys here.  :P
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

It just has to work once.
Actually, if yelp is right, kids should try it during the youth season.

I tried it,  don't know if it technically worked.  I got a gobble out of it.  The bird I was working ended up having three girlfriends.  Am I glad I had it in my vest?  Yep.

I think just like lots of turkey hunters out west.  Many of us are learning how to still call to turkeys. I know I haven't mastered the language.  I am still learning new things every year.  Hen squealing is just a new type of call.  It is an evolving sport.  Some of us get comfortable using a select type of call.  I use all kinds.  I can use all the mouth callers, friction calls and wing bone calls.  But there are many hybrids that turkey hunters try and create.  I think that there are so many choices out there and different materials..by using some of these it can give you and edge when out in the field.

If everyone hunting turkeys goes to clark allsports, walmart and buys a HS crow call, HS deuce slate, HS striker..for the most part they may be successful.  Production calls are made the same and usually sound the same.  90% of how a call sounds though is the caller. Not the call.  There are so many choices now a days for new hunters than we used to have when I started. I also know that you do not have to be a proficient caller to kill a bird.  I have killed many birds by saying very little..I killed those birds because I was in the right location.  That being said  I carry many types of calls in my vest...Hey a new topic.  Anyways the beauty of hunting turkeys is that they can be killed by calling many ways.  If you don't want to use a particular call..don't!  Just like fishing...lots of ways to catch them.  And yes Banjo minnows do catch fish!   :chuckle:
