new camera recomendations

Hey guys, i hate for my first post to be asking for advice, but here it goes.  I am currently debating on whether to get into DSLR photography or not.  Any advice on that would be great.  As far as cameras, I was looking at the cannon rebel's and the Pentax K-r or k-x? Anyone have a review or pros/cons about those or other recommendations? thanks alot

I have plenty of experience with the Canon 30D and the Canon 40D DSLR cameras and I Love Them! From what I have seen, the Canon Rebel is every bit as good as my two Canon Cameras. I surf a lot of Photography sites and I have seen some totally spectacular photos that were taken with Canon Rebels. If you want to go further into photography than just the occasional photo you might want to step up in class over the Rebel so that you can do more of the camera settings; but for a beginner the Rebel is a Great Choice!

Dick takes some great pics and that's good advice.  I will add though, that IF you go Canon, make sure it will accept "L" series lenses.

I bought a 50D with the kit lens last year, and I wasn't too impressed with it until I put some good glass in front of it.  WOW what a difference!  Buy a used (but in good shape) body and spend the rest of your budget on some better glass.

Canon 50D is a good camera, but then again, so is a Nikon.  If you go Nikon, I would go for the D7000, its a lot better than the D90, although a little more money.  I am a Nikon shooter.  the reason I went Nikon is because if you have the right body(D7000 or D90), you can use any of the older manual focus lenses.  Don't think you can do that with Canon, but could be wrong.  I would suggest finding a good camera shop and go try them out.  It's like buying a new rifle, go see what feels good in your hands and shoots good, then buy it.

 I have the D7000, Pro's; lighter than D90, more mega pixels than D90 and (reportedly from Nikon) a more durable body to the elements. That said the D90 is still a great camera for the money. You might even look at the D3100, I have one of those as well and it also has more mega pixels than the D90 and is even lighter than the D7000.

I am rather satisfied with my Canon (Rebel) T2i.  Its 18 megapixel images are equivalent to having and extra 2x on the zoom relative to earleir models (ie 10mp). The image stabilization is worth the price, too. I chose a Tamron 18-270 lens that isn't "L glass", but a good all around performer for me. One lens does most of what I hope for.  One day, maybe I'll get the 500mm lens, but I am OK with what I have.
