As a soaking wet "dyed in the wool" Trad Bowhunter myself, and family all with bows, I pretty much figure that my daughters (and son) are most likely not going to be able to pull 40# when they start hunting.
I own a Zouave .50 call sidelock percussion that I hunted with before I got into Archery, and most likely will start my kids out with a ML.
My Rifle is too heavy for them, and I own 2 CVA kits to make a .50 rifle and a "Philadelfia Derringer", also .50. that my father bought back in the '70s.
My wife says she wants to build them, but I know she probably won't.
I could build them myself, but feel that the rifle would also be too heavy for them.
Thinking I should try to sell/trade for a smaller and lighter .45, but not decided, as the satisfaction of building (actually just assembly and finish) might lend something to the whole experience.
What are your thoughts, should I hang onto the kits, and plan on ..some day.....
or sell/swap ?
Just so you understand, I really dont know when/if I actually would get around to putting the kits together, and my daughter ( is beginning to study for her "Hunter ED"

for me I would keep the kits for the kids to work on later.I would find a youth model .243 for them to share for now...I picked one up for 2 hundred after some searching...I would hate to discourage them at all while young with a muzzy,not that it would ....But...

Discourage them with a muzzy ?
Not sure how that would happen.... we live in an "any deer" ML unit, lots of does and small bucks around, also I would take them Elk hunting (and feel that is the best chance of actually harvesting an Elk)
I feel they would be more discouraged by hunting during "modern" seasons, and would develop skills that will help when they take up bowhunting.

knight is coming out with a little horn .50 cal in may.  they are shorter and lighter than the bighorn.  You can check them out at the knight website.  Just a thought.  Seeing they are the only one I know of that is making a youth model muzzleloader.

501 is a great unit for Deer and ML's for sure! But the side locks are heavy beasts!

Id keep it all and get a inexpensive inline. You will only need one probably that they can share. There so much lighter! And plan on "someday" for the kits!

i agree, but i agree with rasbo also, but if its gonna be musket huntn, knight makes a good cheap smoke pole there in lines are very light and very accurate, good luck girls your gonna love it

Just my  but I would not start a child out on a side lock muzzle loader. The movement of the hammer and the flash are likely to cause an inexperienced shooter to flinch. This would be setting up bad habits for them that will be harder to break down the road. If you do decide to go with a muzzy I would suggest an inline or an underhammer.
