blue mts permit

Anyone on here draw the blue mts foothills east permit last year? (i think that is what it's called)  It is the late whitetail hunt around Dayton.  I don't remember seeing anyone post anything up about it.  Just curious, and sitting here at work killing time thinking about the upcoming season.  I will have 10 points going into this years drawing for the "buck" hunt and only 1 point for "quality" buck.  Obviously, my odds are a little better for "buck".

With 10 pts you shouldn't have a problem drawing that permit, that's one of the funnest hunts around, I've always tagged out with that permit, matter of fact everyone I know that's ever had it just about has tagged out.  Last season I know of 4 guys who tagged out and the year before 2 others I know tagged out.  You want Blue mt foothills west though for the area around Dayton, it's the better of the 2 and has more tags available

I knew it was west that I wanted....It was published as East in the regs, and I just found the online corrections.     Good to hear that its one of the funnest hunts you've had!  I am not to worried about tagging out.  I was just curious as to what kind of experiences guys had during this hunt.  I have never hunted late whitetails.  Hoping to get drawn, as my general season won't be happening.  My wife's due date is October 16th!!!

It's not a quality permit remember...I still have all my "buck deer" points.

Thanks!  I should have known something was up when I came home to a nice dinner and a drink waiting for me.    
Personally I think she looked ahead on the calander and planned it that way knowing full well I wouldn't catch on until it was too late.  
I think I've had her double check her and the Doctors math twice already.

Nice buck 400out!  I have seen a few solid bucks running around the hills there.  Actually missed a pretty nice one two seasons ago during general.  Good luck pulling one of the permits Jackelope.

Problem is that with the new draw rules, everyone and their dog has a bunch of points for the "Buck" hunts.  That tag used to be in the same pool as the tags that are "quality" now.  I think that means that a LOT of people will be putting in for the Blue Mountain Foothills hunts (both east and west).  Yes, used to be a shoe-in if you had 10 points.  I doubt that is the case anymore...

That muzzy permit is hot.  I know a guy here in town that killed a 170" class whitey on that tag.

Sounds like you have bad luck I know guys that religiously draw it every 5th or 6th year, I have the same luck.

I think I agree that the odds and points thing will change now with the new system....however...if you look at the averages up to 2009, both the east and west rifle permits averaged 5.4/5.8 points to draw. I think the muzzleloader ones are the better ones timing wise.
Maybe 10 points won't be a shoe in anymore, but up till now it would have been.

I'm seriously considering going muzzy this year just for the fact that the general season can catch the end of the rut and if you know land owners a guy can have a heck of a hunt without drawing! when I went on  a muzzy hunt last fall I was really impressed

Those permits have sounded interesting to me too.  I know there is alot of private ground down there.  Is there much public ground worth hunting?  I have no land owner connections, which im sure helps a ton for those tags.

Connections are always good, but the permit that includes 154, 162, and 163 has lots of public and ffth land. 1 or 2 guys on here may have some tips as to where to start.

I'm sure there are woodchuck.  In my spare time i need to browse some maps and see how much public land is down there.  There are alot of units included in that hunt, just need to research.

There's some pretty good FFTH but be prepared to burn up some fuel finding them, you won't find them marked on any map, the gohunt map is a joke for finding most FFTH in these GMU's.  I'm glad I did years ago when fuel was still $1.50/gal.

It is a fun hunt and I agree the draw odds will be terrible with this hunt being in the regular buck category. To bad for the guys who live in the area and see this as their trophy hunt. My boy got lucky and drew the tag this year with 2 points and killed this buck on the last day. There are bigger bucks down there but for a eleven year old he did good. nwhunter
