That's happened to me so many times, I finally learned that if the dog even moves a leg you gotta get another round into them or they will get away.

did that before. shot a yote in the shoulder with a 270 he jumped up and I tracked a half mile or so through a swamp blood everywhere at first with bone in it and then it slowly just started goin away until there was nothin. It obviously wasnt a direct hit to the shoulder where i was aimin but it hit somewhere in that region where there was bone. I thot you could a yote anywhere with a 270 and itd go down but i was sadly mistaken

It's amazing how much blood a dog can lose without it killing him.  If he can run for 2 miles, he probably wasn't hit that bad.  Sorry to be the rain on the parade, but it seems to be the day for it here.  Should have put another round into him while he was thrashing around.  :violent1:
Dont quite understand your comment about raining on parades and its the day for it :dunno: :dunno:

Guess you'd have to be here--it started raining just after noon, and has been pouring rain steadily since then.  Did the same thing day before yesterday.  It's been more like Seattle here than Eastern WA.  Don't think I've seen this much rain here in the 40+ years I've lived here.  Sorry if my comment confused you.  I still think that bugger crawled into a thicket to lick his wounds.  You'll probably run into him again.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Here is a pic of the last yote I shot with my 30.06 before I bought the 223.  If its too graphic, Mod's let me know and I will delete it. 165 grain bullet that went in through the neck and came out the midsection.  :yike:

Its possible you were real close to him and just passed him by. I spent an hour once looking for a buck that only traveled 20 yards. I finally had to lay out a piece of toilet paper on every drop and look at the trail from a different angle. The last piece of paper was only six feet from the buck, when in wet side vegitation critters can really blend in. I am guessing he was probably bled out by the time you got down to the few drops here and there. You could have been right on him. Always pic a spot on your coyote before making the shot, its easy to get excited and just aim at the whole coyote. They tend to be smaller than deer and other big game, so vitals are praportionatly smaller also.
You don't need a flatter shooting rifle or a larger caliber. What you need is good field marksmanship. Jeff Cooper.

Man that is a bummer! But it reminds me of the 1st one I shot over by Quincy last year. He was about 175 out and I shot him with PredatorPro's 22-250 - he spun around and then dropped and we were all high-fiving & waiting for him to stop wriggling when he got up and slunk off into the grass!  :yike: Blood all over the freaking place but couldnt find him anywhere. About a half hour of looking I hear a muffled POP in the grass about 20-30yds from me and then PredatorPro comes thru the grass dragging a dead/bloody dog. He found her curled up in the grass hiding and pretty much jumped her just a few feet from him. Man she freaking stunk too!

Too bad you never found your yote....

The lats area of blood that we saw was wide open, almost no vegation on the ground due to no sunlight in that area.  We looked around everytree and stump on the ground. :bash:  Thanks for helping out when I called that day
