Scopes for hunting in WA question
« on: March 20, 2011, 06:23:25 PM »
If I am hunting for an animal that can be legally taken with a scoped rifle, can I use a scoped muzzleloader?

If you have the modern firearm tag and it is during the modern firearm (general) season, yes.  Also, I believe if you have a special permit with a modern firearm tag, yes.

If its for a  "big game animal" then you must hunt during modern firearm season, with a modern tag. If you want to use a scope on a smoke pole. If you are just hunting yotes, then you can use a scope on your muzzle loader any time you want.

You could hunt bears with a scoped muzzleloader. Or as others have said, deer and/or elk during the modern firearm seasons, with a modern firearm tag.

Great info! To be more specific, its an area that is firearms restricted, but holds bears. I feel that my chances will be better with a scoped muzzleloader than a bow. It seems the only time muzzleloading regulations are concerned is during elk and deer muzzleloading season. Is that a correct assumption?

Yes, you are correct, because a bear tag is not weapon specific. With deer or elk tags you have to choose modern, archery, or muzzleloader. Not so with bear tags so you can use any weapon that is legal in the area you are hunting.
