Which scope should i put on my 17
« on: March 24, 2011, 03:46:23 PM »
Hey everyone I won a 17 HMR 93R17 BSEV at the spokane big horn show and I have never really played around with a 17 much and just thought it would be a fun varmint gun and I was wondering which type of scope i should throw on it I have a old leupold that came off my 257 roberts but its only a straight 3 power scope.... I think thats probably a little weak but what do you guys suggest?

I'd go to Cabelas and buy their scope specifically designed for the 17hmr.  They are far better than the BSA ones designed for the 17hmr.  :twocents: I've owned both.  As far as power, they have a couple different choices on power, so I'd go with which one you prefer.  They're very affordable also.

I was looking at one at sportsmans warehouse that had the turrets for wind and longer ranges it looked to be a pretty nice scope I dont remember which one it was but I figured i would go home and do some studying first. I better hurry though cause i have been seeing quite a few groundhogs and ground squirrels lately  :chuckle:

i threw my old leupold on it and its dialed for 100 right now but im not too impressed with it. I took several clays out yesterday and was shooting them at 100 yards but the clay disappears when you get the cross hairs on them, I just need something with more than just a straight 3 power scope.

Im with MtnMuley. Get one of Cableas scopes. Ive got the 3-12x40 Tactical Rimfire on my mach 2 and it works great better than the BSA i had on it. On a side note how do you like that gun. Im selling my mach 2 and looking for a .17 hmr and that was one on my list.

Its a Tac driver and feels great shooting it, and the accutrigger is awesome. I put 100 rounds through it yesterday just sighting it in and playing around smoking clays and exploding them. I cant wait to get out and start hammering groundhogs and ground squirrels with it. And the gun is an eye catcher I love the looks of it. You will definitely like the gun.

I have a Savage 93 in .17hmr that I use for rockchucks and ground squirrels, and started out with a Simmons 3-9.  It was OK, but in scanning for ground squirrels all day it was hard on my eye.  I changed to a Burris Fullfield II in 4.5-14, and it made a lot of difference.  Highly recommend the Burris.  I recently had a chance to buy a CZ .17hmr, heavy barrel, with a BSA Sweet 17 scope.  Finally got it out to shoot it a couple of weeks ago.  Gun is great.  Scope is OK, but it's no Burris.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

With ground squirels and GHs as you main targets and not called predators I'd be looking at something in the 4x16 to 6.5x20 range.  The Mueller APV 4.5x14 is a real sleeper at $120 it is a lot of scope for the money I had one on a 243 that my hunting partner took 3rd place in our club shoot.  The Weaver V-16 4x16 is a pretty nice rig.  Redfield(great warrenty) and Nikon prostaff are nice low end glass.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Leupold 3-9.  VX-II's are great and if your on a budget get a Rifleman or VX-I.
Crank it down to shoot a squirrel at 30 yards or crank it up and shoot a gopher at 200.
Can't go wrong.

By no means are the BSA or Cabelas 17hmr scopes the optical quality as a Leupold.  The neat thing about them though is they're specifically built for that caliber and load.  If shooting 50-300 yds, these are great.  Range your target, spin the turret, and hit your target.  If most of your shots are under 100 yds, the need for a 17hmr specific turret style scope isn't necessary.  I shoot 2 17hmr's.  One with a Leupy 4-14 VX3 for shots 10-60 yds on grouse heads, and the other a Cabelas 6-18 17hmr for out to 300yds.  They both work great for their purposes.

By the way, Cabelas has BSA Sweet 17 scopes 3-12 on clearance at Cabelas for $65!

I have one of the 17HMR designated Pine Ridge scopes on the same Savage, I am very pleased with it.

I have been checking out the reviews for all of these scopes and you can never really tell what one to pick because so many people have their pros and cons. A lot of people rag on the bsa sweet 17 but a lot of people on here seem to like them, and for the cabelas pine ridge its kind of half and half, so this post is really helping me out i just have to start weeding through them now and make my final decision anything will beat my straight 3 power old school leupold haha  :chuckle:

I was really surprised how well mine worked on praire dogs. My brother and I layed down side by side with the same gun/scope combos and picked them off for a couple hours several days last year. The dials worked very well after using a range finder, better than I had thought it would have for that price.

I think the reason so many people are down on the Sweet scopes is that the first run of them had problems.  Once the bugs got ironed out, they're OK.  The one I got with the CZ seems to work just fine.  That being said, when it comes to optics, you really do get what you pay for.

The cheapest one I can find, then take your good money and spend all of it on a nice top quality scope for me :chuckle:

Get a $100 A/O scope. That's all you need for a $ 200 gun. That's what I have with no problems. Who wants to spend 2-400 bucks on a $200 gun. I wouldn't.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............
