duck decoy question
« on: March 24, 2011, 06:28:21 PM »
I bought some used decoys.  They're all in pretty good condition, but most of them are a littlt scratched up. A little paint missing on the head.    What do you guys do to repair scratches and missing paint?

thanks

personally, if they are minor i just run it. if you are missing chunks of paint like the size of a stamp then i will repaint them. I believe you can find kits for it.

Many of the waterfowl supply companies supply decoy repaint kits or matching colors, Macks Praire Wings, Cabelas, etc.  There are also various decoys sites that offer paints as well.  A good one to start with is http://eallendecoys.com/
If they are inexpensive like hot buys, I sell them and buy new each season.

Cabelas sells the Herter's paint kits. I bought the Pintail and Mallard kits a couple years ago. Very tedious work. They came out looking very good though. Good winter project. Make sure you rough up the plastic and prime them before painting. I used steel wool.
