planning an alaskan bear hunt
« on: March 25, 2011, 01:12:52 PM »
Im planning a bear hunt for me my brother (who lives in AK) and my dad for when i get out of the army this september since it would be something fun for all of us to do when i get out. Were looking at admiralty island since we've heard good things about it. I was wondering if anyone on here knew anything about it like cabins to rent or areas to hunt, cause im trying to make this a great hunt since it will be the first time i will have hunted since joining the army. If anyone has any sort of info it would much appreciated, like numbers to call for advice or if you know anything first hand. Thank you.

Am leaving for that general area April 28th for a 10 day spring bear hunt.  Will let you know what we find.  My son lives outside of Juneau so we will be boating out of there.

I am in the early stages of planning a hunt around the Ketchikan area for '12.  Looked into a Ferry Ride but found it would cost almost $2000 for 2 people from Bellingham and that is without a room to sleep in for the two day trip.  Will prolly just make the drive since it is only about 28 hrs away.

We are DIY, with my son as my guide.  We have one possibly two other locals going with.   Over the last 5 years of living there my son has gotten to know those islands very well.  We will be starting out In Berners Bay then moving down to the St James Bay cabi.  Depending on what happens we might move south and hunt the back side of Douglas.  Odds are we won't need to cover that much area but were traveling lite so we can move if need be. Planning on putting has many fish in the boat as possible along the way.

Sounds like you have quite the trip planned. I wouldnt think that youll have to cover that much ground in that area to get a bear. Im still looking into areas to hunt since we wont be mobile like you will be. Yeah you might as well take advantage of the fishing also while up there

Hope we won't have to move that far,  they have already been seeing a few bears up high so things are looking good for seeing some action on the beaches in a couple weeks.

I have been up that way a few times, and cant remeber if it was admirality Island that had the grizz, while the rest of the area only had blackies.   :dunno:

Yes that island has one of the largest populations of browns anywhere.   Should be exciting.
