mount whittier
« on: March 27, 2011, 01:30:04 PM »
hello everybody I'm new to the site just got log in today and excited to talk hunting  with u all and hopefully post pics this year if i harvest an animal. anyway i was wondering if anybody has got drawn for the mount whittier permit i heard it is easier to access then the upper smith creek area. the odds to get drawn are pretty descent compared to outher bull tags it looks like tough country but that don't bother me at all I'm not a road hunter i like to hike. just curious thanks any thing will help.

RE: -Better hope your in the top of the points list! Then still you need a miracle to draw it!

i drew a Margret cow tag for archery with 4 points three years ago. that was some of the best hunting. i was in elk everyday. and the odds were harder to get that tag then they are for upper smith and mount whittier. especially for muzzelloader. which I'm thinkin about doing this year, that is if i don't get drawn for multiseason elk. i have 5 points this year  :chuckle:. i believe in miracles don't you

I know every inch of this unit, backpack and deer hunt up there.  A good friend drew the muzzle tag a few years ago.  Steep and deep, can access from Coldwater Lake or MT Margaret/Norway pass, or from Johnstons Ridge to Coldwater peak, etc.  message me if you need some more info.

I'm putting in for that hunt and upper smith creek done alittle research on both how long of a hike b4 you get into the unit are the trails\boundaries easy to figure out. i got a trail map of the areas and it looks pretty strait forword, but the map trails are always deceiving. i will scout it a bunch if i get drawn. I'm sure there is alot of elk. and is it wide open. if it is a nice day can u really c every elk in the unit thanks for your input. oh and where can u camp around there. Ive hunted the Margarete a few years back but never camped just drove there every mourning
