Well any grandpa has a video camera I think. This shoots in HD and it is very compact. I've had it for a couple of months now and it works for me and that little gift from heaven called a granddaughter.

HD video camhttp://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Ultra-Zoom-Camcorder-Black/dp/B0032UWTGI/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1301480931&sr=8-5
times before with just leather, wool and cotton.

the hds don't zoom in as far do they? I have a 60 zoom sony. With a small tripod it works amazing. It's runs around $400. I've video taped a couple duck hunts, a coyote hunt, and lots and lots of deer out in the field. I'm very happy with it.

Dang............. not sure what to tell ya. Terminology and ACRONYMS change like the weather any more. So. I have a Ford F150 down the road from me. My 300 mm camera lens frames that truck with maybe 2 to 3 feet on either side of it. This video cam reaches and optical zoom where that same truck is engulfed and then it go's into a digital zoom mode and all I get is red from the tail gate. I would no doubt say a tripod is needed at that magnification. The camera says 20X optical zoom. I am not sure how it is measured after the digital zoom kicks in.

But then, I got it for grandkids. I hope to never have to zoom in on them.  ;)

*** edit ***

60X? Whoa!!! my spotting scope is 36 and I can read the tab on that same truck...................... maybe just the plate................can't really remember now.

I think that's going to be hard to replace.

I have a little Sony HD camera that is pretty sweet. The zoom and clarity is great and you can decide between like 5 different settings as far as quality that you want to record in. The nice part about that is say you are just videoing around camp or something, you don't need the best HD so you just choose standard def and it uses way less storage. Mine also has a touch screen view finder with tons of options. If I remember right, when I bought it last fall it was about $500.
