Project Springfield.
« on: March 30, 2011, 02:05:12 PM »
Hey guys.. I figured I would share with the board my latest project:

Back Story:

My Dad's old hunting rifle is a springfield .30-06. He has had and loved this rifle forever. Well, we took it out this past year and it wouldnt shoot the broad side of a barn, groups were WAY off. Found out that the barrel was basically shot out.  Anyway, I decided to grab it from him and rebuild it for him from the ground up.

What was done:

Douglas 5A barrel, 25" 1-11 twist - matt blued
Timney trigger installed, set to 2.5 lbs
Boyds laminate stock
Glass bedded
pachmeyer decelerator recoil pad
Leupold rings and bases
3 position safety installed
Action honed, lugs lapped and trued
bolt handle, extractor claw and bolt bead blasted and polished to silver

... All work except stock work done by Dan Cowen.

Here is some pics:

Love my old 03-A3.  Shot it last weekend. Still shoots MOA with the four groove barrel.

The stock was unfished from Boyds.. they are one of only two that had a sporterized springfield stock available. It did require some fitting in order to make it work.

Chukar
I have a buehler on a mauser, they are not 3 position. Just on and off about 30 degrees of travel. Can use a scope without raising it too high. Midway has 'em made by Timney.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the barrel set you back?

I can't look it up here at work, but definitely need to replace the bbl on my 03-A3
