Looking to get a new spinning rod for Salmon/Steelhead

I am looking at getting a medium or medium/heavy spinning rod for salmon and steelhead fishing. I have been looking at the Lamiglas rods and really like them. I'm just not sure what model and all of that... Also any suggestions of a good spinning reel to go with it? I have an idea, but am totally open for suggestions. Thanks!

Something that will rate to 17 pound test. Be a little light for BIG Kings but you want it for Steelies too.
If you get a Lami, you'll love your drives to Woodland to replace it when it breaks. And it will...

I've had good luck with lamis, I've actually broke more of my loomis' than lamis. What kind of fishing are you looking to do with it? All around?

This is a good rod.  I have 4 of them for the boat.  The Lamiglas and G-Loomis rods will all break if you use them hard.  Most of my broken rods are from being caught in the door, stepped on or jamming them in the gunnel.  I have only snapped a few on fish.  I had to send 4 rods back to Lamiglas last year and 2 to G-Loomis for repair.  Overall both are good rods.  Lamiglas has an outlet store in Woodland WA.  It is at exit 20.  It's on the east side of I-5 and G-Loomis is on the west side of the freeway.  Same exit.

I have never had a Loomis break due to hard fishing. Never. I have 31 Loomis rods and some are the old IM6 and Premier series rods. Still going strong and have logged thousands of hours on my rods.
I have had Lami's, Rainshadows and St Croix Avids all explode or break from hard fishing.

anything will break if you're hard on it, as a rule, the higher the modulus a rod is, the more brittle it's gonna be.  take care of your gear(no high sticking!) and it'll last you a long time.

only rod i've ever busted on a fish was a $40 quantum that i foolishly high sticked when trying to beach a king on a steep bank.  never found all the pieces of that one.

to answer the question, it's hard to go wrong with something in the 8'6 - 9'6 range, the lamiglas X96JS is a good start.

wow! thanks for all the input everyone! I really appreciate it! but most of the fishing I will be using it for will be steelhead and the smaller salmon.. I'll use it for Kings a little but mostly Sockeye, Humpies, and Coho. My dad has had 10 or so Lamiglas rods that have lasted probably twenty years so I'm partial to them for that reason and I feel the G Loomis rods you just add $100 to them cause of the name on it... But I am absolutely open to any suggestions.

Have you looked at the Okuma rods?  I love mine... my 10'6" bobber rod, had a 35-40 lb. Tule on it for about 10 min. last year, handled it fine.

Smaller salmon and steelhead I'd go with something in the 9'6"- 10' 6-12 or 8-12lb range. That way you can float fish in a pinch. It will be a little light for kings but it can be done. Everything else, including silvers it will do fine on.

Why not go to a casting rod and go to a 10' 8-17? I just got the herzog rod and it is sweet!

That was one of those love/hate days! Fishing was great! But started bad! Huntbear had that sob on and it got off. Then I stuck a smaller steelhead and had him to the net. He decided to do another run and my drag locked up on me and he snapped off But them we got even with them. Huntbear got a nice steelie and then I caught my biggest steelhead to date!!!

As far as rods go, anything lamiglas! Those guys just kick butt! If you get a lami with lifetime warrenty you will be set for life. They are the best company out there for customer service. They have exchanged many rods without proff of purchase. Gave new rods to people who broke the rods stepping on them or in the door of a truck. Even when warrenty does not cover it. I spent some time in there shop a little while ago. I now have two of the highest value production rods in my rod rack. They are SICK!!! Can't wait to put the smack down on some fish with them. Even there basic rods have a 1 year warrenty on them. Go lamiglas
