Hog Doggin with a Knife
« on: March 29, 2011, 09:35:00 AM »
Has anyone ever conducted any Hog Doggin? Hog hunting with dogs and a knife.  Looked rather interesting and something I might pursue next year. Just wondering what it is like and a basic rundown on how an operation like that goes. I know there are a few states that allow it (Texas, Hawaii, etc.) and it seems rather interesting. Thanks.

Georgia also allowes it.

It really depends on who's dogs you are running.  Every group has their own system and preferances.  The group of guys I know will typically have 2 types of dogs, Bay dogs and Catch Cogs.  The Bay dogs are released first and typically consist of Cur's.  The catch dogs can vary a bit I have seen American Bull dogs, Cur's, Pitbulls, etc.

What usually happens is the Bay dogs are released first.  The Catch dog (dog's) is kept on lead.  The Bay dogs track the hog down and get him cornered.  Once the hog is cornerd and the huntes get close enough they will release the Catch dog (dog's).  Thats typically when all hell breaks loose.  Once the Catch dog, which usually go for the ears, has hold the Bay dogs gain a little curage and they will start grabbig the hog.

Once the Hog is trapped you can go in and grab the hog by the back legs and flip him over on his side.  You put your knee in his neck and stick him behind the front shoulder into the heart.  I have seen them stick them in the neck as well.  Don't go grabbing the front legs, other wise he may spin and cut you.

The group of guys I know use to catch them alive if they were of good eating size.  They would duck tape there legs and mouth shut.  Take them home and put them in a pen.  Feed them out and de worm them for about a month and sell them.

I have no experience with this outfitter. I found this site when I was searching for other activities to do around Disney World. Looks addicting.

Most of the time the operation works like this. You have a pack of dogs you have your pursuit/runners that will track and then Chase the hog. Once the hogs get tired from running which is not to far for most hogs. They will bay up and turn to fight the dogs. Then you and your guide will bring in the fighting/holder dogs. Mostly pits or pit crosses. They will run in and grab the hog by the ears and hold onto it. Most good guides put vests on there fighting dogs because they can get slashed to riddons holding on to the board head. Once they have the hog you will come in and stick the boar. This is not no ninja chops and slashing. The guides want you in and out quick and don't want you around there dogs slashing at the pig. One good stab and a couple of twists will get the job done.

*censored*! All of my ninjutsu training for nothing.  :bash: Thanks for the info Carp and Michele. Checking out some videos on Youtube. Interesting stuff. Definitely on the list of things to do now. Now if my money tree can add a few more branches I will be all set. Already got this year locked up with Texas Pig Hunt (Rifle) and Wyoming Antelope. Next year is looking good for Argentina Red Stag. Maybe an early December time frame next year in Hawaii would be good. A little beach, a little pig and goat hunting and lots of sun and booze. Especially since Alaska Airlines fly's to Hawaii from Bellingham Airport pretty cheap.  :party1:
