Sight Pin Opinions Wanted
« on: March 31, 2011, 12:43:39 PM »
I've been looking at getting a Spot Hogg Seven Deadly Pin or Hunter Hogg-It with seven pins. Wrapped of course. It's available with .029, .019 and .010 pins. I've got the .019 pins on my sight now but was thinking that I'd be able to be a little more accurate with the .010 pins. But, would they be too small for hunting? Anyone have any experience with difference size pins?

I think one you get used to the .010 you will like them. I'm in the process of switching from .019 to .010, it was tough at first but the more I shoot them the better I like them.

Did ya hunt w/em last fall? Wondering how they'd be in the woods, shady areas ext.

I think I'm going to switch to 7 pins in .010 on my hunting bow.  What I think woulbe nice to have is .019 for 50 yards and in and. 010 for 60 70 and 80 yards.

I have a wrapped SDP with .019 pins. If I were to buy another one I'd get the top four in .019 and the bottom 3 in .010.

If two different pin sizes is not an option for you I'd get the .010 for all. Sometimes I feel that the 19's are too bright. In full sunlight I like to wrap the wrap with some black tape to get rid of the "pin halo" effect.

.019 is the way to go! .029 is a little to big on targets 40+ for me and .010 is hard as heck to see and the .019's pick up more light. I shoot to 100 yard in practice. .019 is just right for me.

Drifterat, I have a Real Deal(5 pin). The SDP is a Real Deal only w/7 pins. Mine is also wrapped and they can be awfully bright at times. That's why I was thinking of the .010 pins.

Carpsniper, what sight are you using? The wrapped Spot Hogg sights are super bright. Those .019 pins look like glowing dots on bright days.

I have one of the sight that has different size pins.  .019 for close range and the .010 for 30+ yard.  I believe this is a good combo.  No problem seeing the .010 pins at all, but I believe the brightness of the fiber makes a difference.

Check out Sword accu-site. The will build the sight with any pin combo you want. I have an apex 3rd plane with six pins alternating green and yellow. the top two are .019 and the rest are .010.
The the sword apex will be the same price if not a little less than the Spott Hog. Sword has great customor support and service.
If you are set on the SDP its a good sight and you will be happy. Id recommend the .010 because the their .019 are too good at gathering light on bright days.
BTW Im not paid by sword. I'm just throwing out an other option.

I checked out the Sword site. Lots of nice looking sights but couldn't find any accu-site.

Have you considered the option of going with the 0.019 and saving the $60 wrap?  That's the best bang for your buck in my opinion.  This is what's on my bow.

My hunting partner got a new Black Gold sight that the wrap cover changes purple in bright light like some folks glasses do to limit the pin brightess.  Pretty slick.

I have the Montana Black Gold with the purple wrap, it has 7 pins and it works pretty slick.  The pins are all .019, when its bright outside the wrap turns purple and the pins are crisp and dont have the overpowering haze/glow to them.  I do like the idea of the .010 for the longer distances, say from 40 to 80.  I have had it on my bow for a couple years now and really like it.
