I hate how some logging companys spray after they log to stop the underbrush from growing and kill the would be grass to come up.  :bdid:
But I do like planting clover seed along those new roads and firebreaks.  ;)

We just finished a job in packwood, and we had to swat the elk out of the landing every morning, then they would go about 100 yds and lay down and watch, One logtruck driver has a pict. of a cow sniffin the inside of his truck when the door was open.
go ahead on er.

When my dad was a feller back in the day, the deer and elk would be all over and he even told me that he's seen deer and elk get in the log trucks before.
As for finding out where they are logging, call the owners/agency of the land or follow the log trucks. Locals will always know where they are logging so ask one of them.
hey thats a good idea thanks

I have a favorite timber patch that we had been seeing many elk in during late archery (including a cow and 4 bulls; a spike, two 4 pt and a dandy 5 pt, that walked right up to me 2 weeks after late archery. Wind was just right. Never happens during the season).

We showed up a month later and the timber was gone. Just piles of slash and very much deer and elk sign.

This southwest facing spot will be a premier feed area as soon as it gets some sunlight and grows new browse.

I love clearcuts. We need to make many more in the National forests.

What do you guys think is the best age of clear cut to find deer and elk? On wetside, I think 6-10 year are best.

"How soon AFTER it's logged..."?  Heck sometimes they don't even wait for it to be logged!  I've had them feeding about four or five tree lengths away while I was cutting, and the only time they appeared nervous was every time I ran out of gas and the trees stopped falling, then they would all get up and stare at me.

I've also seen them drop their calves in our fell & bucked.  (That's actually the only time I ever felt bad about taking a nice stand of Cedar).  Apparently that was were they liked to calve every year and they weren't going to pick a different place just because there wasn't anything standing there anymore.

Like others have said about working on the rigging; they come through, and sometimes you have to stop yarding so you don't take out the whole damn herd.

In fact when the herd comes through your setting during hunting season, and some idiot starts shooting toward you...well, It's NOT a good feeling.  I think that's a big part of why the gates are locked now during the week.  I would've loved to get my hands on a few of them.

Ok so i hear from all of you that you agree the animals love the freshcut greens, but my question is what happens when the greens are gone and the grass hasnt started growing yet? The animals would move on for awhile at least and then maybe come back once the grass starts to grow. Agree?
