Found some brand new rubs on a piece of private property i'm hunting on next season and i'm confused. My friend saw about 30 elk on the property the other day with a couple spikes and two points. He's also seen some blacktail around too. When do the elk lose their antlers and it's way too early for a blacktail to b rubbing right?  What are the bulls rubbin on the trees for?

They often rub right before they shed, my theory is that the material that holds their horns on breaking down starts to itch.

I hope so. I'll just keep checkin the rubs. Weird how the elk haven't even lost their's but the blackies have lost and are growin already.

Spikes and 2 points seem to be the last to drop, this not rock solid just my general observations. My theory, larger racks cause more stress at the connection between antler and skull.

I think they itch after they drop too.I've seen a few bulls rubbing trees that have allready dropped.I also watched some cows rubbing on trees like they were using them as neck scratchers.
