Daughters first turkey!
« on: April 04, 2011, 03:42:35 PM »
My daughter Brooke shot this bird on the second day of the youth hunt. 19.5lbs, 20yd shot with her mossberg 20ga.

A little story to the hunt!
Our Saturday started out nice we had good weather but it turned quickly, rain, sleet then snow. I mistakenly packed my younger daughters boots so Brooke had to cram her feet into a very small pair of boots, she said she would tough it out though! But her feet soon got cold and sore. We had birds come out of the roost but would not respond to the call. So we called it a morning and I drove to town and bought her some new boots! That night we put 12 (Twelve) toms in their roost!!!!! The next morning they came out of the tree about 60-70 yards and put on one heck of a show for us strutting, fighting etc. but they still would not come in. They went over a hill and we decided to leap frog them. We got on the road ahead of them and put out the decoy. Two minutes later 9 of them passed by at 40-50 yards to our right and we thought we lost them again, then we looked over and one was strutting up to the decoy Brooke adjusted the shotgun and shot the tom that was strutting on her decoy. Sunday was beautiful weather and perfect!
The biggest problem is that it was still early in the season, a late spring, and the birds were still in their winter groups. They would NOT respond to calls. But with a lot of help from our friend Brent he got us on the birds, so thanks Brent if you happen to read this!!! (scouting, calling, getting up early)

Brooke is officially a turkey hunting addict now!!
