AR issue
« on: April 04, 2011, 10:45:48 PM »
So my buddy has a Sig 516 patrol rifle.  we went to the range this weekend and after about 6 rounds his gun went click :bash:.  cleared it and looked at the round and there was NO strike on the primer.  reloaded and the gun shot the next few rounds just fine.  put the "dud" round in my rock river ar and it fired just fine :IBCOOL:.  just curious if anyone has ever seen anything like this before.  its wierd to be because it wasn't a soft strike on the primer it didn't touch it at all.  p.s.  his has about 500 rounds through it with no issues...

Maybe pull it apart and make sure there is not a bunch of build up around the firring pin. Make sure it is cleaned and lightly oiled. That would be my tip.

That sounds like it was fired slightly out of battery, if the carrier slammed home like it should the primer would be dimpled if the rifle was functional. If it was just barely out of battery the hammer would hit the back of the carrier and shove it the rest of the way forward instead of firing.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Since other's are throwing ideas out there, I'll add my  :twocents:  Since you and your friend are experienced with ARs, and the bolt and firing pin are reported clean and lubed, have you actually looked at the firing pin itself.  I know a lot of the guys I served with in the Marines used the firing pin as a scraper on the barrel crown just inside the flash hider, and sometimes on the ridges inside the bolt carrier.  Over time it will dull the firing pin down a bit.  Or it could just be a bad firing pin.  Like I said, just my  :twocents:

the out of battery idea makes the most sense.  its just wierd that it was running fine.  the firing pin was my first idea because i had one that would ftf once in a while and it ended up being a slightly bent firing pin.  cant really see this one being bent but if so hell be right on the phone with sig.

I've seen the same thing when the bolt doesn't quite slam home all the way. The round could have not come out of the mag right and slowed the bolt just enough to not close all the way.
