Coolest hunting area in Washington
« on: April 13, 2011, 11:54:41 AM »
Just curious what experiences everyone has had in different hunting areas in Washington as far as scenery, terrain, abundance of different wildlife etc.  Not looking for specific honey holes or anything just curious as far as cool areas go.

I hunted the cowiche area a couple years ago.  When we drove ontop of the ridge where we got our wood I had a perfect panoramic view of the cascades.  On the way back I followed a fox running down the middle of the road and a couple days later we ran into a cougar on our hunt.  Really cool area there and cool hikeable timber and terrain.  Saw a few elk but nothing we could shoot.  My hunting party hated it there but I don't necessarily get why.  Lewis River had its charms but didn't see as much critters or terrain as cowiche.

That looked like where I was at last year.  Lots of snow and fog!  It was fun being out in the woods in the thick fog when its eerily quiet.

I can remember a couple times back in the 90's when sub zero temps were the norm for the end of November NE WT rifle hunts.   :chuckle:

Westside without a doubt, i dont know why people flock to the eastside.
There are more huntable animals per square mile of public land open to hunting on the westside than the eastside.
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Anywhere above treeline, the Pasayten, Skiline Divide and my honey holes.  I have never hunted the first two  areas but rode horse and hiked into them, they had the most beautiful views.  It's the most beautiful country.

:yeah: Love the alpine at or near the treeline. Don't really see a hoards of animals but the high altitude wilderness areas are my favorite.

Okanogan and/or Chelan counties would by my choice for the "coolest" country to hunt.

Cool timber and awesome scenery and wildlife are why i even hunt to begin with.  A kill is great but you are guaranteed to see some of the coolest scenery every trip!

Right at or above the treeline would be top, but a very close second for me is chasing big mules with a bow in wide open sage.
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

The Pasayton, The Sawtooth, Alpine Lake Wilderness, Mt. Baker Wilderness, Chelan county, Okanogan county, and the high country on the westside.

I used to be a fan of hunting river bottoms on the west side. loved sneaking around all the old side channels and little funnels in the thickness. The last couple of years though i've spent quite a bit of time hiking up into alpine areas and I'm quickly becoming addicted to it. Planning some high buck scouting trips this summer. How can you beat ground like this when you see critters like that?
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.
