Scouting for deer and elk?
« on: April 08, 2011, 08:54:58 AM »
OK, I know where the deer and elk are but I always have some kind of luck on my side when I spot them in September. The question I have is when is it to early to scout for deer and elk? I have been wanting to get out and put my camera up and feed the deer and elk!!

I try to be out there any time of the year, any weather. I put cameras up even when the antlers are off cuz the blacktails I hunt dont go far. If you have the means, being a year around hunter can only benefit you in the long run
Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional

I've got four trail cameras out right now, on deer trails, and hope to be putting out a couple more soon. I don't think it's ever too early. As long as you have time, do it. I figure at least it gets me out in the woods and learning my area better. This is for blacktail deer though. It may be a little different if you're talking about mule deer, or elk in areas where they migrate.

I really start my elk scouting in June.  Then I will go over for a weekend about every two weeks.  By mid August I will have 3 or 4 treestands up.

I hang my cams in late May...(whitetails)  Doesnt do me any good to hang cams earlier...cant tell size and I dont want my cams out where people can steal them or out in the elements wearing down my cams. Elk I have my spots already so cams go up on wallows in late July...I may go check out areas in the the summer to see what the roads look like if they are gated and what type of logging has gone on,but for finding elk around here in june or july means nothing. They wont be around come Sept.

That's a good point about having the cameras out in the elements and possibly wearing them out. I guess the only reason I have mine out right now is that I have a new area that is private property that I just got permission to hunt, and I'm trying to see how many animals are out there. Plus I just got some new trail cameras and I'm just wanting to see how they work.

I think I need to just spot what I'm doing and get on my high horse and ride out to the private property that I will be hunting and set up my cams. I also have a number for a guy that has a ton of property that gets 2-3 damage elk tags from WDFW, i was given this number to call back in late November and heaver yet to call. Like I said I will need to get off my butt and make things happen......I think I'll start now with the scouting and setting the cams and hope that I didn't miss an opportunity to hunt private land for elk is lost :bash: I'll keep you posted......

Thinking about it some more, the way I see it, is my trail cameras aren't doing any good if they're just sitting at my house. I am going to try to keep all of them out in the woods all the time. That's why I bought cheap cameras, so that if one gets stolen or quits working it's not that big of a deal. The latest one I just bought is a Wildview that I got off ebay for about $32. Then I have two Tascos that I paid $40 each, and a couple of Moultries which were about $80 each.

I'd rather ask forgiveness than permission!
