went and picked up my permit for copalis spring bear
« on: April 14, 2011, 04:00:02 PM »
I picked up the permit and headed to the south east side of the hunting area but could not find a gate that was open, did not get a chance to go to the north side of the property,

don't get caught up in the thought of hunting the north boundry of the property just cuz it borders the indian rez....the bears are all over the unit.  when we had the permit a couple years back we hunted exclusively west of the humptulips store.  follow that road out 4-5 miles and take a right on the 6000 line.  The bears are there but didn't see real good sign until about the first week or two in May. We only saw one bear before Memorial day weekend and that Saturday we saw 3 and took two. I know its frustrating as its brushier than hell but stick with it.  find an area with fresh sign and sit tight.  have posted these pics before but just want you to know they're there...  good luck

thanks for the info! I was looking at google maps and it looked like the north side had more clear cuts is why I was thinking to go there

You don’t necessarily want to hunt the cuts. I would look for spring food sources like grass, skunk cabbage and young timber.

I drove to Hoquiam yesterday and noticed that the main gate by Promised Land is locked and they put 5 big concrete blocks in front of the gate. Kinda curious what the reason for that was.

Wasn't that one usually locked anyway? If it is the one I am thinking of, the road runs straight.....into the creek. But you can access it from the other side.

I think your talking about the gate that is about 200 yards north of Promised land park which is always closed.  :dunno: The gate Im talking about is the one about 1/2 mile south of Promised land park and its usually a red dot gate but there is often log trucks going in and out all day long. That gate sees alot of daily traffic so it seemed kinda weird to have it blocked considering the nearest gates to that area are at least 5 miles away, maybe farther.

Yes, you are right. That is real odd.

NW-GSP, I am probably going to be down there as well during that time, May 1st through the 5th or 6th, maybe we can meet up. I may bring the family but we could share some stories and help each other out if we tag a bear. Let me know.
