2nd deer, archery vs. modern question
« on: April 24, 2011, 09:13:23 AM »
Why do the modern guys have so many more areas open to a 2nd deer draw than the archery guys?  I put in for my archery 2nd deer tag and was basically forced to choose 4 areas that I have no knowledge of.

I couldn't tell you for sure, but I would guess it has something to do with the vast majority of rifle hunters having to take antlered deer only during their general seasons, as opposed to archery and muzzleloader hunters having the opportunity at antlerless deer each year with their general tags.

Why couldn't they make archer 2nd deer with an antler restriction?

Not for sure, but most 2nd deer hunts are in areas where they need the deer thinned out.  Rifle hunters have higher success rates in general.

2nd deer tags are set up from a management standpoint. Rifle hunters are statistically more succesful than archers, therefore they are a more effective management tool.
