Turkey input needed

So I was driving out of my turkey area this afternoon and I slowed down to look at some flowers and I thought I heard a gobble. So I turned my truck off and waited but heard nothing, so when the starter engaged I heard it again. I shut the truck off and wait still nothing. I slowly open my door (old Chevy) and the door squeaks, and I hear a gobble and instantly I lock on to the turkey. He is standing about 3 feet off the road about 10 yards in front of my truck. I thought at this range I could easily blast through the brush and take him out, but I didn't. So I back track leaving my truck in the middle of the road and try to parallel him until I can get a clear shot. The shot never presented itself, so my question is what should I have done to make the best of that opportunity? What tactics would have worked best?

Don't take any offense to my answer.  I would have kept driving bye and left that turkey alone.  When I am turkey hunting it is all about working the bird and calling him into range.

Phelps, you beat me to it.

No offense luv, but the best thing about turkey hunting is calling them in and the interaction between you and the gobbler. If I get rid of that part of it, I would quit turkey hunting.

No offense taken, I have only been hunting them for a few years and with a new son at home I have extremely limited time so I wanted to make the best of a situation. Would it have been worth trying to get around him and set up and call or after he saw me would I be wasting my time? I guess that is what I should have specified in the first post.

From my experience, i would say it would be tough to call that bird in once he saw you.

That is what I thought but at least I know where he is hanging out!! Now if I can just find the time to go out again before the season closes.

Deffinately note where you see them and when. I have returned several times the next day to a bird I new I couldn't pursue that day and bagged them on the next.

I've called birds that I have seen driving around. I like to drive way past them before stopping. I then work my way back and call them in.

I don't have a problem with a drive by as long as it's a legal shot and you are going home after a long hunt. It's better then tag soup

yeah no big deal but last year I saw way to many piles of feathers in the middle of the road ... not the side but right between the yellow lines....more hunter not obeying the law than obeying the law .. thats why I dont like it not to mention to many times to count some walking up on me while the turkey is gobbling his head off and bang bang bang right out of the trees and right in front of me ...thats why I hike as far away from the road as possible ...now stay cool I am just saying what I prefer ......I am hoping to go by next Wednesday .. PA BEN do you have a washington big game book .. I wrote a couple stories in there... one about an eagle taking my decoy and another about a pair of yotes stealing our gobble as he was coming in strutting...

No I don't is that what's it called?  BTW, While Hunting Sunday morning I called in a hen. I heard a bird screech and the hen took off for the woods. Some red tail hawks were hanging around and I didn't think one would spook off a turkey, but a big eagle flew over and into the next field. About 10 min. went by and she came out. Love sitting and watching the wild life.
