4 Birds Down!
«

Had a great opening morning this year! We hiked into our usual property and my dad and brother decided to go to the backside of the property while my other brother and I decided to sit somewhere else. The toms were gobbling a lot right as it started to get light and they turned out to be roosted above my brother and my dad. They flew down shortly and my dad and bro called 4 toms into 20 yards and blasted one each. Me and my other bro didnt have any action until about 6:30. We were turned around looking at some hens that were coming in behind us and we turned around there were 4 jakes at about 15 yards crowding around our hen decoy. My brother shot one, but I couldn't get a shot. We tried calling for a couple more hours with few responses and then decided to give the property a rest, so we headed to a different property to try our luck.
When we got to the other property we let out a few hen yelps and immediately got a couple responses. So, we walked about 50 yards and set up our decoy and sat down. After a couple more calls, it began to sound like it was getting a lot closer. A couple minutes later, I spotted the tom running down the steep mountain face about 200 yards coming right to me!!!!!
. A coule minutes later, I saw the tips of it's fan right above some brush as it strutted in about 50-60 yards away. There was a lot of brush, so I had to wait until it got into an opening, so I got in position and it appeared right in the opening at about 15 yards. My dad clucked so that it would raise it's head out of strut and BOOM! Tom down. 11:00 am. This bird came on a string from about 300 yards away!
Hunted the rest of the weekend until this morning and had some close calls, but couldn't tag any more birds. It was a very fun hunt and we each got one bird. The toms all had about 8.5-9inch beards and and the jake had a 3.5 inch beard.
