Elk Permits.... Kinda weird....
« on: April 18, 2011, 12:20:37 PM »
So they usually only list the hunts that you are eligable for but for some reason it's showing both east and west for me. No I didn't draw the multi season elk. Anyone else's showing up like this?

Could be wrong but when I did it last year I tried to put in for both and in the end it kicks you out and says you need to pick east or west tag......

What are you going to do if you draw a west hunt with a east tag :dunno: :dunno: can you say crick and no paddle  :chuckle:

Might hurt a little when you draw a rifle rut hunt in the blues, but have a west side rifle tag and they tell you you're SOL.!!

So what about bull elk hunt choices 2837 Grande Ronde B and 2838 Grande Ronde C? They are apparently a special permit and not a raffle, but under tag required it says "any tag" so could you draw that permit with a west side tag and still be eligible to hunt it?

That's how I read it, they will tell you east or west otherwise. Look at the watershed unit as an example. Only east but any weapon. Grande Rhonde is for anyone easy or west.

Whoa there. I'm not easy,  :chuckle:  but I am planing on muzzy hunting the west side and there aren't a whole lot of special permits that catch my eye over there so that might be an option.

you mean Grande Ronde Vista which a cooperative land ownership agreement in the mountain view unit #172 not the Grande Ronde unit #186.  I was wondering the same thing and hope to call the WDFW tomorrow to find out if this is a typo, or do they mean any eastside tag no weapon preference.

Yes that is what I was referring to,. It also gives the phone number for the ranch but requests that you not call until after August 1st to schedule. I would like to know how many days they are giving hunters and what the trespass fees are. Seems that would be important info to know before applying. I like the idea of it but I am a little leery. It also states that you must check in and out on your hunt days. Are they going to be up at 4 in the morning and 10 o'clock at night to check you in and out? If it's a 9 to 5 gig where you just drive a farm road and shoot something than I would not be interested.

I'm pretty sure it means just what it says- "Tag Required to Apply:  Any Elk Tag."

Which means East or West, and any method (Modern Firearm, Muzzleloader, Archery). The only stipulation is that you still must hunt with "the hunting method in compliance with your tag."

Quote
Special Hunt Application Required (Category): Bull Elk
Who May Apply: Anyone may apply.
Hunt Choices Allowed: Up to 4 hunt choices may be selected for this category. Use the 4-digit "Hunt Choice" number below to submit your application.
Notes: You may hunt only with the hunting method in compliance with your tag

Can't you change your tag up to opening day?  If you draw the hunt for the wrong side just change.

They only let you exchange tags if you do not apply for special permits.

Figures, thanks for the clarification.

Contacted WDFW today and they didn't have a clue about the Grande Ronde bull elk hunts. Spent a while on the phone with them and now I am more confused than before I called. I did find this thread about the area but would really like WDFWs take on the whole "any tag" deal before applying. Does anyone know who I should speak to at WDFW to get a straight answer on this hunt.
