Help for a beginner!

My friend and I are planning on going Turkey hunting this year but we are both newbies. I have seen a few turkey hunts on tv but that's about it. I was wondering if I could get some insight on what kind of calls to get, any dvd's or places online to watch videos on calling, and some places to go. We are from Port Angeles, but are planning on hunting north of Spokane near Kettle Falls and Chewelah. I  had planned on getting a mouth call and one of the slate ones and have a few decoys set up. Any information would be greatly appreciated it! Thanks a lot.

How about a little more introduction, then start asking questions. However, I know of a few places that the owners and land managers want them out. So finding a place should come without too much grief. As for calling, I never have needed to. I personally think turkeys are stupid. I have heard them and then stalked up to them and arrowed them without much effort.
 A buddy came up late archery this year and the guy leasing the property asked him if he had a turkey tag. He didn't, so we went to town and got him one and he whacked his first turkey with a bow (recurve at that). Now he wants to come up and do it again!

watch and learn... get a turkey hunting dvd, watch it and listen for the sounds they make to call in the bird then try to make those sounds yourself. big things for turkey hunting is camo and movement. also hoot owl call before sunrise to figure out where they are.

A box call is a very good call for a starter. I would also try to pick up a few mouth calls and start learning with them

     Devour DVDs, books, articles.  Read the past posts on this sight. Go to seminars ... there are some at this weeks Sportsmen Show in Puyallup and others often held at local sporting good stores or sportsmens clubs (I have done numerous ones for Cabelas, Wholesale Sports, GI Joes, Tacoma Sportsmens Club, Wellspring Christian Outdoorsmen, and others).  Join a NWTF chapter (some may even take you under their "wing').  Visit the NWTF website ... they also have articles and even the various turkey sounds available to mimic.

Practice your calls a lot.
Pattern your gun.
Scout the birds & area.
Learn proper setups and how to setup your dekes.
Do not overcall, especially while they are on the roost.
Be patient.

I love fishing the rivers out west for steelhead and salmon. I also enjoy hunting and would really like to get into it more. Thanks again!

Thanks a lot for the information sun dance. That makes sense! Do you know of a way of finding out what land is public? Hopefully we'll be able to a private land owner to let us hunt and get that up before the season but either way we'll have some spots picked out before the actual season starts. thanks again for the information
