new and need some help
« on: April 20, 2011, 01:11:09 PM »
I have never been turkey hunting. I just dont know any one that goes. I want to try but don't know were to start. I have a shot gun and a bow i'm thinking shotgun still new with the bow. If any one has any tip let me know thanks. I live in lake tapps so i am kind of thinking central area or southwest area.

Hire Bearpaw. Let them show you ropes and then go solo next year. Or Tanglewood. Or other guide svc that advertise on the site.

If you are going out and you are new I would take the scatter gun over the bow. It will give you a little more range and turkeys can be hard to kill with a bow. Only a couple of small spots to hit them and bring them down. + Bow hunting for them is super tuff without a blind, they will catch you drawing 90% of the time. I don't know the area but good luck to you if you get out and about.

Find a CD and learn to call. I would hit the NE. If you get out where there are higher turkey numbers you are going to be more successful. Don't expect to get one the first year by yourself. There is a lot of tricks to learn and always something new is going to be thrown at you. Once you get one to gobble back and come into your call, you are going to be hooked. Get good with several calls. I like to sound like multiple hens when I am calling.

Definitely start with the shotgun.

As long as your a safe hunter and if you can make it over to the eastside I'd be happy to take you out for a day.  You'll learn a bunch and be ahead of the learning curve.  Just let me know if you can make it over and are interested.
