Used a Ruger Number One in .375 H&H last year to take a Washington black bear at just over 300 yards. The rifle & bullet worked very well. I used a 260 gr Nosler Accubond loaded to a mild 2620 fps using Reloader 15. Very accurate, easy shooting, and very effective. I lost sight of the bear during recoil, but could clearly hear the thump when the big bullet hit the bear. He was down instantly, and crawled maybe 10' under some bushes, leaking rather badly.

Surprisingly easy cartridge to load and shoot.

Well good job now lets see some pictures.

Me? Sure - but they've been posted on the forum before:

Me, the .375 H&H Number One, and the bear:

Like Sisu, I came across the .375 at a very good price, and just couldn't turn it down. I no more "need" this rifle than I need my own 747, but it's fun to load and shoot. Carries well in the hills too, and is pleasingly accurate.

I figure bear & elk are worthy targets until I can draw a moose tag, or figure out how to afford a brown bear hunt, or a trip to Africa. This rifle's already been to Africa with a prior owner, and clobbered a cape buff. I thought that was pretty cool.

Sisu - let me know if/when you want some load info. I've got some pretty decent load data avail for the .375 and can likely get you a shortcut to a good load for your rifle.

Regards, Guy

Guy, that's a nice rug.  Was that your bear?  Your son's look like it's got quite a bit of reddish brown in it.

How'd they cook up?
