  I started shooting handguns in the 90's when glocks were the only way to go... as far as autos anyway.  I have a first gen model 23 that has at least 10,000 rounds through it.  Scratched, ugly and beat up, the ol'  "combat tupperware" just goes bang every time I pull the trigger.  I have had 1 jam, a stove pipe when I was practicing my off hand skills.  but I think thats a pretty good track record.  I have a gen 2 model 20 that is still shiney new with maybe 1,000 rounds through it.  No malfunctions yet. my next one will probably be a model 29.  I really like the Glocks but thats what I started with and I'm familiar with them. I haven't filled one with sand and tried to shoot it but I did go for an unplanned swim in the saltwater once with the M23 on my hip.  A day later I was able to clean it but there wasn't a speck of rust on it anyway.   

They are all good guns and reading the debates between them is pretty entertaining (not quite as entertaining as the "which caliber?") Just remember that any gun can and will malfunction under the right (or wrong) conditions and videos are easily edited or reshot to support a view.  And Just like "Ford VS Chevy" everyone has their personal preference.

What agency are you working for? In Washington State you don't usually just "get into law enforcement," for a commission you are required to attend the 720 hour Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Academy. That's after a minimum of three interviews a psych interview and a poly graph exam. No disrespect, but it sounds a little, liaise fare, to say that a department is going to buy you a gun and then award you a commission.

That being said, I was issued a Glock 21 when I attended the academy back in 2005. I completed the 110 hour block of range qualification without a malfunction. I still use the same gun on patrol I also use it to shoot in a Police Combat Pistol league. Off duty I carry a Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm compact. I prefer it over the 40 cal M&P because of the magazine capacity. One other thing to consider with the M&P is the fact that there is a safety feature that does not allow the the weapon to fire when there is no magazine in the well. Not a big deal for a sportsman carrying the gun in the field, but it could be an issue in a combat situation. This feature is easily disabled, but you have to consider department policy which may consider disabling a safety feature a violation. If you don't want this feature on your gun make sure you order it with this feature already disabled.

Thanks for the info, I am going to be a county deputy in Montana, I have been going through the testing the last couple of months and got the call 2 weeks ago that they are going to hire me, Pending a background check(spotless). I won't be going to academy till January, I will be doing 16 weeks of training on the job with the dept before academy and will need to qualify through the dept to carry during training, I am looking to get some practice with my carry weapon before then.
My Brother in a Officer in Olympia and carries a M&P and really likes it, He has a Glock 21 also and a 27 as a back-up.
I am going to Bullseye in TAcoma this week so I can shoot all three brands and get one that is comfi in my hand, That seems to be the thing to look for with all the advice I have been getting from here and my friends, "get one that fits you"

Good luck in Montana, can't beat the resident hunting benefits.  I own a glock 23 and a Springfield XDm-45.  I really like both guns, but perfer my XDm.  Like others have stated, it really comes down to fit.  Don't rule out the 45 or 9mm.  I perfer the recoil of a 45, it is more of a push then a snap.  Don't get hung up on one caliber, go shoot a 9mm, 40 and 45.  Others will get into a debt over knockdown power, but it really comes down to what works for you.  If you enjoy shooting it you will practice more and have better control on shot placement.  Also if you carry a 9mm you will have a greater magazine capacity, which balances out the whole debt over knock down power.  The XD and the Glock are great guns and very similar when it comes to the working parts and reliability.  I don't have much experience with the M&P.

Good luck and I was just as curious as Hank when I was reading this thread until I kept scrolling down and read your reply.  Well good luck and I'll send you a congrats after you graduate the academy!  If they have a good firearms instructor then you should not have anything to worry about when it comes to the range.  He/she will be able to help you get real acquainted with your new weapon and prepare you for the proper use of it.  But it doesn't hurt to have experience beforehand with your new weapon.

I just got back from Cabelas and Wholesale Sports and got my hands on a few guns. I did not care for the XD, just didn't feel right to me. I did like the G4 Glock though and the M&P, I like that they both have interchanging grips to custom fit my hand and both are very simple and easy to operate. The M&P was a little for comfortable, but I can't get the reliability of the Glock out of my head. 90% of everyone I talk to says the Glocks are Rock Solid machines.
I wanted to go to Bullseye and shoot them, but they don't have the G4 Glock or the M&P for rent

Incase you did not know the xdm fits a little diffrent and comes with 3 diffrent grip inserts.

Have you already been hired by a Law Enforcement Agency? If you haven't you might want wait before buying because they will give a discount for being law enforcement. Are these the only three brands that are policy approved for whom you are going to be working for too? If not you might want to look at H&K or Sig Sauer.

I agree 100% I do not care for the xd but love the xdm. The changes in the two really made the xdm great!

I have been hired and they are buying my gun. These were the 3 brands my training officer suggested I look at. It can be a 9mm, .40, or .45.
I did pick up a Kimber today that felt AMAZING, it was a 1911 looking gun, really nice, but not what i would consider a service weapon. My TO told me to run it by him before I make the purchase, he did not mention any other criteria

A couple of the smaller local agencies around here carry Kimbers. I see them when they bring their cars in for work.

I figured  a Montana deputy would be carrying a six gun.
