Smallmouth Heaven
« on: May 28, 2008, 08:58:40 PM »
Me and my Brother-in-law hit Riffe lake pretty hard over Memorial day weekend and WOW it was fantastic.  The females looked like footballs, we caught several fish in the 3 - 4lb range with the average close to 2 lbs.  What was even better was the fact that we had the areas we were fishing completly to ourselves.  Man I love this time of year.  The water was coming up a couple feet a day but it didn't seem to have an effect?

say friend, what were you throwing at them?  when i lived in seattle, close to the lake,, i pounded small mouth pretty good from i-90 on south.. this time of year, seems i always had the best luck with chartruese spinners and six inch topwaters.. small mouth is my fave freshwater fish.

4" Yamamoto green pumpkin grubs on a 1/4 oz head was the best but most anything slowly bounced through the rocks.  If you weren't loosin heads you weren't fishin slow enough or in enough rock.

never fished too many grubs or tubes. pal swears by pumpkin seed gitzits.. on my hard baits,, trout pattern always seem to work magic, no matter the time of year. gosh i loved suiting up in my chest waders and stalking the rocky flats or points. everyone else would be banking it an pulling perch and i would get all sorts of applause for pullin out one of them olive green footballs.. i loved it.... only wish i could do it again.. havent fished for bass in many years.

Coonhound, we were also down at Riffe on Monday. We go down for the driftwood at the Cosmos end of the lake. Saw lots of eagles and a couple vultures.

For those thinking of fishing Riffe, the new boat ramp between Cosmos and Tiednapom park is open but very shallow. The only other ramp open is the MossyRock Park ramp at the south west end. Though as Coon said the water is coming up quick.

I am taking some friends down on the 11th. I hope the lake comes up a bit before then. I have used those Kalin grubs on Smallmouth, they have done real well with either a lead jig head or split shot, I really like the pumpkin or green.
I will report on our success or otherwise!
