War Birds - 300 WSM 185 Berger VLD

Figured I would share a picture of my "War Birds" and what they do to paper.. when I come back from my MT spring bear hunt next week, hopefully I will show what they do to an animal!

300 WSM, 185 Berger VLD, Winchester Nickle Plated Brass, IMR 4350 60.4 grains, Federal 215 GMM Mag Primer, 3050 fps (chrony'd), OAL = 2.88 (seated -0.02 from the lands)

Rifle is Weatherby Vanguard (Howa) Sub MOA.

You can buy a Sako TRGS for quite a bit cheaper than 6K.  Also, Savage built them for a couple years for Lazzeroni.  Definately the big dog of the 30 cals.  I've seen quite a few scope-whacks from them!

Yeah it is breaking, but most of my old bear haunts back home in the Flathead are still under 4 feet of snow.  Will be memorial day before I head back and see if we can find one for Dad.

This recipe is using IMR 4350. 60.4 grains.

Yeah thats sweet ... I just took my buddys .270 weatherby mag  and he said it doesnt shoot for crap and loaded up some 140 gr hornadays and now he is a happy camper ...yeah I love loading up different stuff.. Well I am going to order some of those berger bullets and try that same load ..let you know ..thanks good luck !!!

Just as heads up... The Bergers are super sensative to seating depth. They recommend starting almost in the lands in some cases.. mine are started at (-0.02) so not to cause pressure problems.

Also.. if you have any Weatherby's... it might not like em due to the free bore..

Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.. I have loaded a lot of Bergers and so far like the results but they are particular.. so be prepared to do some very sutle adjustments more than most bullets.

They haven't for quite a few years.  Neither does Savage.  There are still a few TRGs floating around on the internet.  They've tripled in price though.

I am shooting almost the exact same load out of my 300wsm Weatherby Sub-moa.  Same bullet, just more powder 67 grains.  1" groups at 200 yards, I pegged a nice muley in wyoming at 515 yards using a Nikon Monarch with the BDC reticle. Added a muzzle brake and had the trigger set to 2-1/2 lbs.  great shooting gun!

what kind of velocity are you getting with the Weatherby Sub MOA? Only thing that shy'd me away from that caliber in the vanguard is the length of the barrel.. in Vanguard its was 24" for a long action cartidge, I was not a fan of the cut in velocity.. wish it has a 26" barrel..

Regardless.. getting 1" MOA at 200 is awesome!

BLUESDUDE did it up end him like on T.V and what did it do as far as damage to the meat .... blood shot or not .. thats why I always shoot hornaday bullets .. never loose much retension and they up end things .... I can see why the berger could be a lttle more tricky to seat the bullet because they are longer but Like most reloaders I always make a dumby first .. the closer you get the bullet to the riflings without touching them the better groups you get ... just saying ...Plus Never full length my casings once I shoot them from my gun just neck size them ..always better groups but just cant let no one else shoot your bullets ..thats the down fall .

Bowhunter.. no bear.. got there at the tail end of winter.. very late spring in NW MT.. saw only a couple as it would snow one minute, hail the next, then sun.. this was a cycle repeated every 15 minutes.. So..

Had a great time regardless..I am going back in the fall.

MDgrand, shooting 2950 fps right now with that load, my gun seems to like it.  The factory loads I first shot were well over 3000.  bowhunter, I shot the muley in his bed broadside right behind the shoulder, could see a huge red spot appear as soon as she hit even at that distance. The deer stood up, and then fell over and down a steep slope.  just a little bloodshot meat since I tucked it into the front shoulder a little.
