Northeast Boar Down
« on: May 28, 2008, 10:24:40 PM »
I took my cousin out this past weekend to help him fill his spring bear tag. This was the only weekend he was able to get out and hunt, so the pressure was on. It was a great day! We got to our bear spot at 9:00 am and at 12:45 pm Kevin ended the hunt by shooting the sixth bear we had seen. I captured the entire hunt on video.

This was the first bear we saw. He was 150 yds away. The wind was marginal and right when we decided he was a shooter, he took off.

After he left, we spotted a smaller bear 100 yds from the first bear. We decided to let him go.

Later, a small bear walked out of the woods 80 yds above us and started rubbing his back on a tree.

A little while later, we saw another bear, this one a small chocolate.

An hour later, a small cinnamon bear come out of the woods and started to feed. Before I could get the camera on him he bolted back into the woods. Then we saw what scared him, it was a bigger cinnamon/chocolate bear. We decided this bear was a shooter.

With swirling winds, we somehow managed to close the distance to 210 yds. Just as Kevin was getting ready to shoot, the bear put his nose up in the air. I thought for sure he had winded us, then BOOM. In the picture you can see the 270 grain slug from the .375 H & H piercing the bears shoulder.

We found the bear 100 yds away, just inside the timber.

I have to agree with Saylean. My eyes are as green as they have ever been and i just keep getting more jealous of the hunt im missing out on. Still good luck to all of those still out there with a spring tag and no bear to fill it. Beautiful bear and great shots Timber.

That first bear appears to be a pig, may be just the photo angle as well.  The one your cousin got is a beauty as well, love that big blaze on his chest.  Congrats.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Man, where were you when I needed some pointers in the Huckleberry Unit!  Just got back from my daughter's hunt and we saw one decent bear across the canyon, but too far to get to it.  We had fun though.

Ended up seeing one bear, four cow moose, six wobbly-legged little moose calves, and had a cougar screaming at us while we were hiking in the dark the last morning, at right around 100 yards.  I thought it was cool, she thought we should go back to the truck!  Oh yeah, and we picked around 75 ticks off in two half days and one whole day of hunting, must be a terrible tick year, have never had them on me like that before?

Good luck to everybody still hunting, it's coming down to the wire now.

I'll see if I can figure out how to put the video up on youtube. I'll work on it this weekend.
Bearhunter, I was using a Sony HC7. It's a high definition camera, the footage looks incredible on an HDTV. The pictures I posted are still frames from the video.

That .375 is a stone cold killer! That's two bucks (one mine) and a bear down since Nick got that bad boy in October. Sweet bear, can't wait to see the video.
