So how would you like to be the guy with over 20 points in the elk draw that didn't get drawn.....The draws in this state are a joke!

I agree the draw in this state is a joke, but not for that reason.
-Its a joke exactly because of that reason!

All that shows is that no matter how many points you have 1 or 20 is that you have a chance. What is a joke is what they did to the system last year that screwed peoples odds up big time.

:yeah:

I like oregons, The top points guys get drawn so the applicant pools turn over, plus first time applicants have a chance! Perfect system!

It works there because they basically have no general season. It wouldn't work here for that reason, IMO.
-They have a awesome general season! Just as good as ours! Plus a permit season that works! We need to recruite some odfw managers to come on this side of the river! See if they will trade for ware...

General season for what? There is no general rifle season for mule deer. And most of eastern Oregon is permit only for elk. A few units do have a general season for spikes. And then yes, they do have a general archery season. And basically no muzzleloader season.

So what general season is it that you think is awesome? You talking western Oregon?

With a preference point system if you didn't get in on the bottom floor where it started it is quite possible you may never draw, especially for younger generations. At least with Washington's draw system you have a chance to draw just like anyone else on any given year. Those that have been putting in longer have better odds than those at the bottom, but those at the bottom still have a chance.

I don't understand the thinking of not being honest when reporting.  I have watched certain permit hunts harvest totals over the years and on some have had knowledge of more animals killed than reported.

Are people thinking if they say they were unsuccessful that they will issue more permits for that hunt or that less people will apply?

I have wondered the same thing.  I know a lot of people that have made the same comment in Idaho.

I know one of the big issues in WA, is that people don't report in time to generate the report.  Due date of January and Report comes out in April, when many folks won't buy their licenses and pay $10 penalty or report until the fall.

I like the system, but I wonder what the participation level is 50%, 60%?  higher maybe?

Actually, not all of the odds got worse.
And it's chances of winning, not odds of winning.  From a mathematical stand point anyways.
The Quality Bull tag applications actually remained very similar to 2009.  Probably because people understand that the chances here truly suck!!!!
The Special bull and antlerless tags really took a beating on increased applications.  For bull the chances of winning got twice as worse and the antlerless tags got basically 3-4 times worse.

The meat hunters with points came out of the woodwork for the antlerless draw.  :chuckle:
