Best Youth Hunt
« on: April 30, 2011, 01:27:05 AM »
So my little brother just passed hunters safety a couple weeks ago and we're looking to find him a deer. I was just wondering what the best youth hunts to put in for are? It seems their are a few to choose from and i'm not looking for spots for myself. Just wondering what a good tag would be to get him a deer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Eastside or westside?  Is antlerless OK?  What weapon?

We live on the eastside so we would prefer that, but anything helps. He's hunting with his rifle and antler-less would be fine for him.

My daughter still has this year and next so it's hard to tell you what he should apply for but the memories I got from our hunt is worth sharing.  Last year she put in for the green river watershed, yes it's a blacktail hunt on the west side but she killed her first deer on opening day. If you look up trophyhunt and go under "My daughters fist deer" you should be able to find the pic's. If not she shot a beautiful 3 point that was around 115 or so. That's a good score for a blackie, anyway we will be putting in for that hunt again for sure.

If he is under 16 put him in for a Youth tag ( probably a doe) it would give him an opportunity to shoot something and get that first animal under his belt.  Most kids just want to shoot an animal their first year.  It is good experience even if it is a doe.  Alot of us adults never get that aopporturnity.  I can't wait to shoot a doe/cow.

where on the eastside are you?
AREA 1010, DAYTON area. Will give him the best chance at a Doe. Youth can take 1 doe in this area. Great way to get the kids involed.

Lots of areas on the east side that don't require a special permit for a youth to shoot a whitetail doe, and there's lots of whitetail does that need to be managed.   :twocents: .
Think southeast!!

Unit 139 start knocking on farmer's doors. No special tag required and some farmers like the does shot off. All you have to do is sit on a good trail by a fenceline on opening weekend and wait. Word to the wise, dont wait till the last minute. Do it some weekend in late August or Sept when they are done with harvest.

Youth Permit 1516 is a great permit It covers two GMU's in Douglas County..Foster Creek and Big Bend.  Lots of private land but lots of public.  Great for Muley Doe.  Also if you get drawn PM me and I can help you.  Good Luck.
