The proper way to care for a fish you want mounted
« on: May 14, 2011, 06:30:09 PM »
Will make this short and sweet. If you catch a fsh you want mounted what do you do??

1. Get fish in the boat as quickly as possible avoid letting it bounce around in the net or in the bottom of the boat.
2. Take lots of pictures.
3. Get your fish in a cooler as fast as possible. Half ice Half water. Make sure fish is completely submerged.
4. Get the fish back to the dock or at home.
5. Wrap fish up tightly in the plastic bag. Tape bag tight
6. Take another plastic bag and do the same thing wrap it tight and tape it.
7. Take newspaper and wrap around the bag with about 4-6 layers and tape newspaper tight.
8. Wrap in another plastic bag and tape it tight.
9. Lay it flat in the frezer. Fish will be good for years wrapped that way.

Things not to do...
1. Be careful of nets and bouncing fish you can lose scales once gone they are gone. You have two choices then a reproduction or a fish with missing scales.
2. Do not keep fish out of water long, slime is dried causing bacteria to set in.
3. Do not cut the gills on it, or gut the fish.
4. Do not leave it in the ice water mix for more than a 12 hour period
5. Do not wrap your fish in wet towels or other cloth material.
6. Do not let your fish thaw and unthaw. If you can not get to your taxidermist after fish is frozen bring it to him/her first and let them freeze it so they can unfreeze when ready.

These little things will help your taxidermist create a memory for you of your trophy....
