Finally got a turkey!!
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:02:50 PM »
I think this is the third time I have taken my boy on a turkey hunt and we finally got one. We are wetsiders so it has always been a quick trip over to try and get on some turkeys with just public land to hunt so we have had a tough time getting it done, but not for lack of trying. I wasn't going to go this year since I drew a spring bear tag and needed to save my time and gas money for that but a family gathering was planned so we had to come over. Since we had to go, I figured lets go a day early and try for a turkey again. A guy I met told me about some state land up above Deer Park so we hit that early Friday morning and called one in but to far out for a shot. After we hiked around we couldn't find or hear anymore birds so went back to the truck and saw some turkeys in a field by the road. I told Cole we could ask for permission if he wanted so we drove to the nearest house and asked. The guy gave us his dads number who owned the land and we were given permission to go ahead and hunt after a quick phone call. While we were driving up to where we were going to hunt we spotted some turkeys and we went after them. It didn't end up being the classic call in hunt like a guy hopes for but more of a spot and sneak and bang its dead type of deal but with our past lack of success and short time to hunt and miserable weather I was happy that we could finally notch a tag and Cole was thrilled. After we hiked and hunted for a few more hours trying to get one more it was time to head out. I took Cole up to the mans house who let us hunt his property and we thanked him and he was happy we got one and invited us to come back again. He said he almost always gives permission to people who are polite and considerate enough to ask first. So it turned out to be a successful hunt and good lesson for my boy. And yes thats a pretty big gun for an eleven year old, he had to use my 12 guage cause I forgot his shotgun shells at home!!  nwhunter

Congratulations, the first one is the toughest. You learn everytime you go and it sometimes gets easier. Some of the old birds have a lot of tricks.

Congrats man. That kid of yours is on a role.

Congrats guys. I love to see kids get those first tags filled.

To see a turkey and a smile like that had to make up for the drive.

Good job!!!! Nice bird, you are going to have a great hunter there. To put the sneak on a tom and get him at age 11 is no small feet. I tip my hat to you.
