Cartridge Suggestions
«

So I was looking through my new Cabela's ammo catalog and became curious about some different big game cartridges. I shoot a 7mm rem mag and have alway just bought the Remington CoreLokt cartridges in 175gr. I hunt mostly black bear and deer. I was wondering what other hunters opinions are on these "fancy" rounds (ie. nosler accubond, barnes tipped) as I have never shot them.

I have used nosler blastic tip bullets in my 270 before I dont have any complaints I just switched back to speer bullets ( cause of money) I have never had a problem with them taking down a deer either. I also shoot 150 grn nosler out of my 308 and it preforms well also. I have never used accubond but I dond think you can go wrong.

There’s nothing wrong with CoreLokt bullets. They will take care of any deer or black bear.

I personaly only use accubonds when hunting now. I have used the nosler bt but at close range and in hot handloads they can make a mess but they are great at killing lighter body game. My accubonds havent failed me yet even if they contact heavy bone. You really just need to look at what you want the bullet to do and then if money is a object look at the price of the bullets you have picked

The biggest benefit to trying or using different bullets is from an accuracy standpoint IMO. Most all bullets will kill a deer quite dead...some shoot a lot better than others in different guns. I like 180 grain Accubonds in my rifle because they shoot well. They also perform well on everything we have to hunt here.
My buddy shoots 120 grain ballistic tips out of his 7 mag. They kill deer every year but the bullet grenades on impact. I don't like that as the yield is excessive blood shot meat.
Try a few and see what you like and more importantly to me what your gun likes...bottom line.

For black bear and deer 175gr Cor-Lokts are going to be just fine (as you already know). The 175gr is heavy enough that you will get good penetration after it loses 50% of its weight. If you dropped down to 160gr Cor-Lokts you may start having problems because the impact velocity is going to be a lot higher and you could have problems with a crappy bullet like a Cor-Lokt....
The benefit for you to going with a "premium" bullet is going to be that you can afford to drop down in bullet weight and still have good penetration and clean kills because you will likely get 80%+ weight retention from you bullet. You will likely get a flatter trajectory with say a 140gr bullet and the recoil will be less. But if you don't care about recoil or flatter trajectory, then stick with what works for you.

If you want to stay with Remington, they do make a bonded core/jacket bullet.
