copalis red dot roads?
« on: May 06, 2011, 09:42:22 PM »
Just curious if someone could explain what the hell the red dot/ greeen dot system is all about in copalis... started hunting today and saw that every perimeter road has a red dot, but most of the gates were open.  I called the front desk lady at rayonier and she said that since they were open you were able to drive into them but be cautious because they could close them at any time, so I asked when they close them and she said usualy by 2 pm... well this evening on our way out I noticed that all the open roads that were supposed to close at 2 were still open
Now im kinda irratated because I would like to use these roads to get in further but I dont want to get locked in somewhere... does anyone know what the deal is here?

Contact the lady again she'll have the number of security in case you get locked in.

hmmmmm...

I've always thought that red dots meant closed to public motor vehicle access...open or not.  I'd get some clarification for sure.  I spend a lot of time out there on the 6000, 7400, and 8000 rd's and never go behind red dots with my rig.  I'd be interested to see what you find out.  If you're coming off the Kirkpatrick Rd onto the 6000 rd there is a huge area behind a few gates that are red dotted almost all year.

Don't go down them.  Red dot means closed to motorized vehicles.  If you call back I would make sure and write the name down or better yet stop by there office in Hoquiam for clarification.

If a red/green dot is on the gate and you have an access permit to hunt bear you can hunt these areas. The red dot means that people without an access permit cannot drive though these marked gates, only walk. She should have given you a few papers explaining this.

hoyt5199 is right.  I believe they red dot the gates to keep out public traffic (not hunting or working traffic) during the hunt.  If you have the paperwork filed with Rayonier and the red pass go on in.  That is what I did last year with no problems.  Last year most access was green dot until the spring season opener then they went red.

I agree with you... we didn't see any sign and the roads/gates drove me nuts... not worth driving over there from yakima, we probably won't be going again

I agree that the map sucks. How are you suppose to tell if your in the grain area to hunt when it looks like my three year old drew the roads. I did not see any bear sign at all when I was there a couple weeks ago not even damaged trees from last year

I've always thought that red dots meant closed to public motor vehicle access...open or not.

That's the way I've always understood it myself.  Didn't realize/think that even permit holders could drive behind the red dot gates.  :dunno:
