Remington?

Howdy
I am looking or a new rifle for my 11 year old daughter.  I like the Remingtons but, to be honest, I have been bowhunting for so long that I lost touch with what is what with rifles.  Cabela's has a 700 ADL and an SPS on sale right now.  I know the SPS is basically synthetic and matte finish.  My questions are, what is the difference between an ADL and CDL?  Which would you concider the better choice?  I don't want her first rifle to be a pile of junk that she will be fighting with.

I shoot a REM 700 SPS in 300 Ultra Mag. I love it, did it cost a fortune no. It has been my go to gun for the last 7 years and killed everything I ever shot at. I love Remington guns always have....

Basic diference between the SPS and ADL is the SPS has a hinged floorplate where the ADL is a blind mag.

With the SPS you can unload by dropping the floorplated and release the cartridges from the mag and just eject the one in the chamber.   On the ADL you have to work them through the action.

 I'm partial to the ADL style. The ADL and CDL action and barrel come from the same place, its just a matter of what stock, bottom metal and finish (blued, parkerized) the factory puts on it. I like a glass-bedded walnut stock very much, but unless you are trying to squeeze every tenth of an inch out of group size, there is nothing wrong with synthetic. You don't have to work the cartridges all the way through the action to unload it either. Just push them far enough forward with the bolt so the pop free of the follower and let them fall into your hand.

It is my understanding that there are NO isssues with Remington triggers. The trigger DOES allow people who are not qualified to fiddle with the sear engagement and pull weight and adjust them out of factory spec, which will allow the firing pin to fall when the bolt is closed or taken off "safe".

Thanks for the responses!  I'm looking for a .243 for my girl.  I like the magazine idea over having to manually eject for her.  The main reason for the synthetic is weight.  She is a big for her age but if she is going to be packing it around all day I want to keep weight at a minmum.

I looked at Cabela's sale flyer.

The ADL and SPS DM (detachable magazine) that they have in there are basically the same gun, just one with a detachable mag.

Not to throw a wrench in your decision process, but I'm pretty fond of the Marlin XS7. Basically the same as the ADL, but a little lighter and $100 cheaper. Less money, but certainly not "cheaper" quality. That would give you a little more to invest in optics. Any of the Marlin bolt rifles and a Nikon ProStaff scope is a ton of gun for the money. Every one I have seen in 243,308 and 270 has been a absolute tack driver.

I would go with the browning 243, just my opinon its a much better rifle.

I would go with the Tikka T3 Lite in .243
It is lite enough for a youngster and will provide excellent service later on as well.

Yeah I agree. If you are open to brands check out the tikka's they are great guns and you can find them for about 450-500.

We are headed into Whoresale sports and Cabela's to check out a bunch of different guns.  I will let her figure which is more comfortable then I will decide from there.   I am partial to Remington and Savage but will check others out as well.   Thanks for the input.

I like Remington a lot as well. If I remember right my family has about 12 of them, Which my 6 make up half But for the money and the gun, I have a time not buying a tikka. We are taking the same tikka to NZ today as we have before. It has never let anyone down. Great guns! Good luck and enjoy the experience with your girl.

Awful nice Youth Model Savage in the classifieds for $250.  Can't go wrong with that for a first rifle.
