Actually, hatchery hens will lay there eggs in gravel and hatchery bucks will fertilize. But hatchery genetics are so poor the would be smolts will not survive. There genetics are engineered (for lack of better term) to not be re producible unless in a hatchery incubation/spawning environment.
Its done for just that reason. We don't want bad genetics mixing with native gene pools.

We don't want bad genetics mixing with native gene pools.

Rumor has it that any river or stream in Washington with a weak native run is at risk of hatcheries being completely shut down for this reason.. If this is the case the guy with the rod and reel is screwed not to mention all the businesses that will suffer.

Well all I can say is every river is under escapement. If thats defined as "weak". Then all will be shut down...
For that reason my ass. Lol, Get the nets out and quit releasing hatchery fish that return thru April and we'll have something!

Some people aren't gonna like this but I wouldn't be opposed to this. All the hatcherys are doing is breeding cookie cutter non-biting fish. As much as I love to fish I wouldn't be heartbroken if they shut it down and tried to build and restore wild runs.

Today's meeting was to see if the nets go back in.  There will be another meeting on Friday to see if they reopen for sport fishing.  Rumor is they will reopen.....possibly for a week.  We'll see on Friday.

CLACKAMAS, Ore. — Spring chinook fishing in the lower Columbia River should resume on Saturday and be open from boats as far upstream as Beacon Rock, Washington and Oregon officials were told Wednesday.

The states will meet by teleconference at 1 p.m. Friday to make a decision when to reopen the river. State officials met Wednesday with the bi-state Columbia River Recreational Advisory Group to hear the panel's suggestions for fishing regulations.

State and tribal biologists on Wednesday upgraded the forecast of upper Columbia-origin spring salmon from 198,400 to 210,000.

At, 210,000 salmon, there are about 3,800 fish available for sportsmen downstream of Bonneville Dam, said Cindy LeFleur, Columbia River policy coordinator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

That should be enough chinook to start Monday and continue through June 15 under the 2011 regulations which had the river open to boats as far upstream as Rooster Rock and from the bank up to Bonneville Dam.

Summer chinook fishing starts June 16.

Hey! I'm not a complete idiot I have parts missing. Though sometimes I wonder.

If you want to make God laugh tell him your plans.

What if river fishing were on a raffle/permit system like some of the choice hunting is in this state? How many of you would apply? Not saying its the right or wrong way but just food for thought... me personally? I'd just stick to the lakes if that came around.

I have actually been thinking about that for a while. What I would like to see is permit draws for after rivers close, such as native steelhead fishing after feb on rivers that could handle a small ammount of pressure.

Wrong....opens Sunday.

From the Joint State Action notice:

    Joint State Action
In joint Oregon and Washington state action the states discussed the following recreational fishery and took the following actions:
Mainstem Columbia River Spring Chinook Recreational Fishery
    
Adopted the following recreational fishery downstream of Bonneville Dam:
    Season:
Sunday May 15 through Wednesday June 15, 2011.
    Area:
Rocky Point/Tongue Point line upstream to Beacon Rock (boat and bank) plus bank angling only from Beacon Rock upstream to Bonneville Dam.
The boundary at Beacon Rock is defined as: A line projected from a sign posted on a dock on the Oregon shoreline across to the exposed downstream end of Pierce Island, then across to a sign posted on the Washington shoreline at Beacon Rock.
    Retention Catch limit:
of sockeye, adipose fin-clipped Chinook salmon, and adipose fin-clipped steelhead allowed. Sockeye salmon count towards the adult limit regardless of size.
Daily bag limit includes up to two adult salmon/steelhead in combination, but only one may be a Chinook.
    Additional regulations:
Effective through June 15, 2011 for the mainstem Columbia River salmon and steelhead fishery from the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line upstream to OR/WA border, it is unlawful when fishing from vessels which are less than 30 feet in length (substantiated by Coast Guard documentation or Marine Board registration) to totally remove from the water any salmon or steelhead required to be released.
In Washington, on the mainstem Columbia River below Bonneville Dam, anglers may not possess in the field fish mutilated so that size, species or fin clip cannot be determined until the angler has reached their automobile or principle means of land transportation and has completed their daily angling.
Angling for shad is allowed from May 16 – Dec 31 from the Buoy 10 line upstream to Bonneville Dam and year round above Bonneville Dam under permanent rules.
Effective through June 15, 2011, in Oregon and Washington Select Areas the hatchery adult Chinook daily limit will be the same as the adjacent mainstem Columbia River when the mainstem Columbia River is open for adult Chinook retention. When the adjacent mainstem Columbia River is closed for adult Chinook retention, the salmon daily limit will revert to permanent rules.
