Do you keep all your tail fans?
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:47:31 AM »
I'm to the point I really don't need another hanging on the wall. What do you do with all the fans? I was thinking about filling a box with them, but the last thing I really need is another box full of stuff. Just curious what everyone else does with them.

I've only got one on the wall, have thrown away probably 5 or 6 of them.  Saved the beards on all the birds I've killed, not sure why on those, but I always save elk ivories as well, so I might as well. I guess the beards and Ivories don't take up much room so I save those.  Haven't saved all the antlers from all the deer or elk I've killed either, so maybe thats why I don't save the fans much.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

I was in the same boat as you, then I saw that new full strut decoy where you can insert a real tail fan and realized if I had a few extra fans and one got beat up I could just throw it away and grab another from the box. :twocents:

I've got a stack of them also-don't know why I don't get rid of them.  I've noticed that they are listed for sale on Ebay for as much as $20-$30. don't know if they actualy sale, but they sure list them as well as legs, wings, beards, etc.   I've actually taken 2 and mounted them together to form a complete circle-looks pretty cool on the wall.

I've saved all but 2.  One was badly mangled so I chucked that one and I gave one away to a cousin who was making jewelry or something out of them.  I too have a big box full of them.  I got one mounted for the wall with the beard, but that's it.

I seem to save all mine.  I had planned on taking a day and mounting them, until the stack got way out of hand.  There will always be someday...................

I like the fan decoy idea. I threw out most of mine last year when we put our new house on. One less box to store.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

I'm decorating the garage with mine. If i need a full strut decoy...I'll pull one off the wall. One hanging in the cabin is enough.

I have kept most of mine. Some day I want to have enough to line the upper perimeter of the garage like a wallpaper boarder.  :chuckle:

Here's a couple of things you can do ...
1) The NWTF has a donation program for tail feathers to benefit an indian tribes request for their ceremonial use.  see nwtf.org for more info
2) Many painters will use them to paint wildlife scenes ... some will even do one for you for your donations and they look really sharp framed on your walls.  Sometimes the painters will even donate one to benefit an NWTF or other outdoor organizations banquet.
3) Take the tail feathers and use them in floral arrangements ... again looks pretty cool on your coffee table.
4) Make yourself a unique feather duster.
5) Make yourself a hat like Yelp's  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Basically there are many things that can be done if we don't limit our imaginations to just tail mounts ....  :twocents:
